Some cookies are memorable because they are rich with chocolate. Others are memorable because they are colourful and fun. Jelly cookies are in the second category. Their bright looks and fruity flavour make them particularly appealing for birthday parties, holiday cookie trays and cheerful homemade gifts.

A good Jelly cookie recipe should give you cookies with a nice texture and a definite fruit flavour. “The colour is part of the fun, but the cookies should still taste good and not just be about how they look.”

These cookies also make a fun alternative to regular sugar cookies. Depending on the flavour used in the recipe, they can look festive for Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter or a colourful summer get-together.

Why This Recipe Is Special

Jelly cookies are unique because they have the familiar texture of cookies but with a fruit-inspired flavour and bright colour. They taste a little different than regular butter or sugar cookies, but they are not a fancy dessert.

Their appearance also makes them handy for theme parties. Even simple decorations can make a colourful cookie tray inviting.

The best version is a balance of flavour, sweetness and texture, not just a focus on bright colour.

What Is Jelly Cookies?

Jelly cookies are cookies made with a gelatin dessert mix as a flavouring, in recipes designed for that ingredient. The mix may add fruit flavour and colour which results in cookies with a unique look.

Not to be confused with Jelly pudding cookies which use pudding mix and have different characteristics.

Jelly Biscuits and Pudding Biscuits

Gelatin dessert mix and instant custard mix are not the same products. They have different ingredients and act differently when baking.

A cookie recipe that is made for a gelatin mix shouldn’t be automatically interchangeable with a custard cookie recipe.

Why the taste is different

Cookies that taste like jelly can have a fruitiness that regular sugar cookies lack. The precise flavour depends on the blend used.

Some varieties taste brighter or sweeter than others, so the final flavour of the cookie may vary.

Selecting Jell-O Flavours and Colours

Different cookie colours and tastes could come from different gelatin dessert flavours. Strawberry, raspberry, lemon and lime are common examples, but suitability depends on the recipe.

Your flavour choice can also play into a holiday or party theme for the cookies.

Strawberry & Raspberry

Red and pink flavours are popular for Valentine’s Day, Christmas and other festive occasions. They are especially striking on a cookie tray with their bright colours.

The colour will vary depending on the product and recipe.

Lemon and Lime

Yellow and green cookies make a great choice for spring celebrations or colourful party platters. Their citrus-inspired flavours offer a different character than berry varieties.

Colour Differences

The colour of the cookie can change as it bakes and the finished cookie may not be the exact colour of the dry mix. Some colours fade or lose their brilliance.

A good cookie should still look good when the shade is not as strong as it should be.

Tips for Soft, Colourful Cookies

Texture is as important as colour. A good Jelly cookie should have a nice bite, whether the recipe is for a soft center or a slightly crisp edge.

The cookies shouldn’t be dry or hard.

Don’t Spread Yourself Too Thin

Cookies that spread too much might not keep their shape. The extent of spreading depends on the balance of ingredients in the recipe, and on the baking conditions.

The perfect outcome: the type of cookie the recipe is meant to produce.

Maintaining a Pleasant Texture

Some cookies are meant to be soft and tender and others are more firm and like sugar cookies. Neither style is inherently superior.

The important thing is that the cookies taste purposeful, not dry, greasy, or too dense.

Why Colour Can Change

The heat and ingredients in a cookie can affect the final colour. A bright dough is not necessarily a bright baked cookie.

Appearance varies between brands and flavours.

Fun times and decorating ideas

Jelly cookies are especially nice for parties because they can be coloured to go with different themes. They can add variety to a dessert platter without requiring elaborate decoration.

Their fruity flavour also makes them a cheery alternative to richer chocolate desserts.

Red and green cookies can look festive next to traditional Christmas cookies. They look bright compared to chocolate cookies, shortbread and other familiar treats.

Days of partying

Colourful cookies are a fun addition to birthday dessert tables. A fun assortment of different flavours can be made with different colours.

Simple Decorations to Make

Some Jelly cookie recipes might be better suited for sprinkles or other decorations. But they should be treated as optional unless they’re part of the actual recipe card.

Storage & Freezing

Store finished cookies in a covered container appropriate to the recipe. Their freshness is based on moisture content, texture and any decoration or fillings.

Some cookies freeze well, but the cookies may change in texture and appearance after thawing.

Depending on the recipe, you may need to refrigerate perishable additions.

What Flavours of Jelly Can You Use in Cookies?

Recipes made for other gelatin dessert flavours may work, but colours and flavours do vary. Use the proven recipe. Not all mixes are created equal.

Do Jelly Cookies Need to be Refrigerated?

Plain baked cookies don’t have to be refrigerated, but it is contingent upon the recipe and any perishable fillings or toppings. Follow recipe storage directions.

Can Jelly Dough Cookies Be Frozen?

Freezing some cookie doughs is a good option, but it is contingent upon the recipe. If the recipe calls for it, you should only freeze a gelatin based cookie dough.
