Tofu Dishes

Salt Pepper Tofu is one of those snacks I make when I want something crispy and salty, but I do not want to babysit a pan of hot oil. You know that feeling when you open the fridge, see tofu, and think, “I should make something exciting with this,” and then you almost talk yourself out of it? This is the recipe that stops that spiral. It is fast, it is crunchy, and it actually tastes like something you would order at your favorite takeout spot. If you have an air fryer and about 25 minutes, you are in business.

What Is Salt and Pepper Tofu?

Salt and pepper tofu is basically tofu that is cut into bite sized pieces, crisped up, and tossed with a bold mix of salt, pepper, and aromatics like garlic and chili. The goal is a crunchy outside with a tender middle, plus that punchy savory flavor that makes you keep grabbing “just one more” piece.

In restaurants, it is often deep fried. At home, I do Easy Air Fryer Salt and Pepper Tofu because it gives me the crunch without leaving my kitchen smelling like a fryer for two days.

It is also a great “gateway tofu” for skeptical eaters, because the texture and seasoning do most of the convincing. I have served it to friends who swear they do not like tofu, and somehow the plate always ends up empty.

What Type of Tofu Is Best for Air Fryer Salt and Pepper Tofu?

Use extra firm tofu if you can. Firm works too, but extra firm is easier to handle and gets crispier. Silken tofu is a no for this one, it is too delicate and will fall apart.

Here is what I look for at the store:

• Extra firm, water packed tofu blocks
• Minimal ingredients, usually soybeans, water, and a coagulant
• A block that feels solid when you press it gently through the package

If you want a little fun dessert side quest after dinner, I am not judging. I once made tofu for dinner and followed it with a slice of Cherry Dr Pepper Cake and it was honestly a perfect “sweet after salty” combo.

How to Press Tofu for the Crispiest Results

Pressing tofu is not hard, but it is the step that makes or breaks crispiness. Less water in the tofu means it can actually brown and crunch instead of steaming.

My simple pressing method

I do this most days:

1) Drain the tofu and pat it dry.

2) Wrap it in a clean kitchen towel or paper towels.

3) Put it on a plate and set something heavy on top, like a skillet or a few cans.

4) Let it press for 15 to 25 minutes.

Tips for Getting Perfectly Crispy Air Fryer Tofu Every Time

This is where Easy Air Fryer Salt and Pepper Tofu really shines. A few small choices make it reliably crispy, not “kind of crispy on the corners.”

My go to crispiness tips:

Cut evenly. I do about 3 quarter inch cubes, or small rectangles if I am feeling fancy. Even pieces cook evenly.

Do not skip the starch. Tossing tofu with cornstarch or potato starch gives it that light, crunchy shell.

Use a little oil. Just a light spray or 1 to 2 teaspoons tossed in a bowl. You are not deep frying, but you still want browning.

Do not overcrowd. If tofu is stacked or packed, it steams. Cook in batches if you need to.

Shake halfway. I set a timer, shake the basket around the halfway mark, then keep going.

Air fryer settings vary, but I usually cook at 390 F for 12 to 16 minutes, shaking once. When it looks golden and feels crisp, it is ready.

What Seasonings Make the Best Salt and Pepper Tofu?

This part is personal, but there are a few flavors that make it taste like the “real deal.” The classic vibe is salt, pepper, garlic, and a little heat.

Here is my favorite seasoning mix for Easy Air Fryer Salt and Pepper Tofu:

• 1 teaspoon fine salt, plus more to taste
• 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
• 1 half to 1 teaspoon garlic powder (or minced fresh garlic added after cooking)
• 1 half teaspoon onion powder
• 1 half teaspoon chili flakes or a pinch of cayenne
• Optional: a tiny pinch of sugar to balance the heat

I like to toss the tofu in the dry seasonings right after air frying, while it is hot, so the spices cling. If you love that sizzling garlic thing some restaurants do, you can quickly sauté minced garlic and sliced chili in a teaspoon of oil, then toss the crispy tofu in it for 30 seconds.

“I tried this exactly as written and it was the first time my tofu actually turned out crunchy. My partner ate half the batch before dinner even started.”

What Dipping Sauce Goes Best With Salt and Pepper Tofu?

You can absolutely eat it straight, but dipping sauce makes it feel like a full on snack situation. I usually do one of these:

Quick soy dip: soy sauce, a squeeze of lime, a little maple syrup or sugar, and chili flakes.

Sweet chili sauce: the store bought kind is totally fine.

Garlic mayo: mayo plus grated garlic and a pinch of salt.

Sesame dip: tahini, soy sauce, warm water to thin, and a little honey or sugar.

Can You Make This Recipe in the Oven Instead of an Air Fryer?

Yes, you can. You will not get quite the same crispiness as an air fryer, but it still turns out tasty.

Here is what I do in the oven:

1) Preheat oven to 425 F.

2) Line a sheet pan with parchment.

3) Toss pressed tofu with a little oil and cornstarch, then spread it out with space between pieces.

4) Bake 25 to 30 minutes, flipping around the halfway point.

Then toss with your salt and pepper seasoning while hot. If you want extra crunch, leave it in 3 to 5 more minutes, watching closely so it does not dry out too much.

How to Store and Reheat Air Fryer Salt and Pepper Tofu

If you somehow have leftovers, here is the best way to keep them decent.

Storing: Let tofu cool completely, then put it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. If you trap steam in the container while it is hot, it will soften faster.

Reheating: Air fry at 370 F for 4 to 6 minutes, shaking once. This brings back a lot of the crisp. The microwave works in a pinch, but it will be softer.

I sometimes turn leftovers into a quick meal bowl with rice, cucumbers, and a drizzle of sauce. Or I snack on it while making something else, like these Cream Cheese Chicken Stuffed Peppers for the family. Different vibe, still comforting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Air Fryer Salt and Pepper Tofu

Do I have to press tofu?

For the crispiest result, yes. If you skip it, you can still cook it, but it usually comes out a bit chewy and less golden.

Why is my tofu not getting crispy in the air fryer?

Most often it is too wet, too crowded, or missing starch. Press it longer, cook in batches, and make sure you are using cornstarch or potato starch.

Can I use frozen tofu?

Yes. Thaw it completely, squeeze out the water well, then proceed. Frozen tofu can get extra spongey, which some people love because it soaks up seasoning.

Is salt pepper tofu spicy?

It does not have to be. Leave out chili flakes or cayenne if you want it mild, then let people add heat at the table.

What is the best oil to use?

A neutral oil like avocado, canola, or light olive oil works well. You only need a little for browning.

More Easy Air Fryer Tofu Recipes

If Easy Air Fryer Salt and Pepper Tofu hits the spot, you can use the same method to branch out. Swap the seasoning and keep the pressing plus starch combo.

A few ideas I make on repeat:

Air fryer BBQ tofu: crisp it first, then toss in warm BBQ sauce and cook 2 more minutes.

Lemon pepper tofu: lemon zest, black pepper, salt, and a squeeze of lemon right before serving.

Teriyaki tofu bites: crisp tofu, then glaze lightly with teriyaki at the end so it does not burn.

Taco tofu: chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, and a pinch of oregano.

Your next crunchy snack awaits

That is my full, no stress approach to Easy Air Fryer Salt and Pepper Tofu. Press it, coat it lightly, do not crowd the basket, and season it while it is hot. Once you make it once, it becomes one of those recipes you can do without thinking, which is the best kind of recipe. If you try it, tweak the spice level to your taste and make it yours. And seriously, do not be surprised if it disappears straight off the cutting board.
