Easy Christmas Yule Log Cake — Buche de Noel is the dessert I make when I want something that looks fancy but honestly does not require fancy skills. You know that moment when you need a Christmas centerpiece, but you also do not want to babysit a layer cake all day? This is that recipe. It is chocolatey, cozy, and it makes people do that little happy pause before they take the first bite. If you have ever been nervous about rolling cake, I get it, I was too. I will walk you through it in a simple, no stress way.
What is a Yule Log Cake?
A Yule log cake is basically a thin chocolate sponge cake that gets rolled up with a filling, then frosted to look like a little log. In France it is called a buche de Noel, and it is a classic holiday thing, kind of like how some families always have gingerbread or fruitcake.
The best part is the “wow” factor is built in. Once it is rolled and frosted, even a slightly messy log still looks charming, like a rustic little branch you would totally find in a snowy forest movie scene.
If you want to see the version I make most often, I keep it all in one place here: my easy Yule log cake walkthrough. I reference it every year because I forget tiny steps like when to peel the towel off, and it saves me from guessing.
Also, yes, Easy Christmas Yule Log Cake — Buche de Noel can be made ahead, which is why I love it during the chaotic week of holiday gatherings.
How to Make a Yule Log Cake
This is the part that scares people, but I promise it is very doable. The trick is making the cake thin, baking it just right, and rolling it while it is still warm and flexible.
What you will need
- Eggs (they give the sponge structure)
- Sugar
- Vanilla extract
- Cocoa powder
- Flour
- Baking powder (just a little)
- Salt
- Powdered sugar (for the towel roll)
- Filling like whipped cream, chocolate whipped cream, or a dairy free whipped topping
- Frosting</b like chocolate ganache or chocolate buttercream
My simple step by step
1) Heat your oven and line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment. This cake is thin, so the pan matters. If your pan is too small, the cake gets thick and cracks more easily.
2) Beat eggs and sugar until they look pale and fluffy. This is what helps the sponge stay light. You do not need a professional mixer, but it does help.
3) Fold in the dry ingredients gently. I know “fold” sounds fancy, but it just means do not stir like crazy. You want to keep the air you just built up.
4) Spread batter evenly and bake until the top springs back when lightly touched. Do not overbake. Overbaked sponge equals crack city.
5) While it bakes, lay out a clean kitchen towel and dust it with powdered sugar. When the cake comes out, flip it onto the towel, peel off parchment, and roll it up from the short end, towel and all.
6) Let it cool rolled up. This trains the cake into that shape so it will not fight you later.
7) Unroll gently, spread filling, and roll it back up without the towel. Then chill it so it firms up before frosting.
When I need another holiday treat alongside it, I sometimes make these too, especially if kids are around: Christmas cake pops. They are easy to grab and they disappear fast.
“I tried this for the first time and was shocked it rolled without cracking. The towel trick is everything. My family thought I bought it from a bakery.”
How to Decorate a Yule Log Cake
This is where you can have fun and not take it too seriously. The goal is “log vibes,” not perfection. In fact, a few messy swirls make it look more realistic.
Easy decorating ideas that always work
First, frost the outside with chocolate frosting or ganache. Then use a fork to drag lines across it to mimic bark. If you want the classic look, cut a small diagonal piece off one end and stick it to the side as a “branch.” Frost that seam and it instantly looks like a real log.
Here are a few toppings that look adorable with almost no effort:
- A dusting of powdered sugar for a snowy look
- Fresh raspberries or sugared cranberries
- Rosemary sprigs (they look like tiny pine branches)
- Chocolate shavings or curls
- Little meringue mushrooms if you are feeling extra
If you are building a whole holiday dessert table, I like adding something crunchy next to this soft cake. This is my go to: classic Christmas toffee. Sweet, buttery, and it makes a nice break between bites of cake.
And if you want another chocolatey make ahead dessert that scoops like a dream, this one is a total crowd pleaser: chocolate cheesecake trifle.
Why Is This The Best Chocolate Yule Log Recipe?
I am obviously biased because I have made this so many times I could probably do it half asleep, but here is why I think it works so well.
First, it is forgiving. The sponge is light, and when you roll it correctly while warm, it holds its shape without drama. Second, it is deeply chocolate without needing complicated ingredients. Cocoa does most of the heavy lifting, and the frosting brings that rich finish.
Third, it is practical for the holidays. You can bake the cake, roll it, and chill it a day ahead. The next day you fill, frost, decorate, and you are done. That is huge when your kitchen is already full of side dishes and people wandering around asking what they can “help” with.
And honestly, Easy Christmas Yule Log Cake — Buche de Noel feels special. It is not an everyday dessert, so when it hits the table, people pay attention.

Why you’ll love this vegan bche de nol
So here is the thing. Even if you are not vegan, having a vegan option during the holidays can be a lifesaver. Someone is usually dairy free, egg free, or just trying to keep things lighter. A vegan bche de nol can still be rich, chocolatey, and totally rollable, as long as you use a flexible sponge style cake and a stable dairy free filling.
What I like about a vegan version is the filling situation. Coconut based whipped topping or a dairy free chocolate mousse style filling holds up nicely once chilled. For frosting, a simple ganache made with dairy free chocolate and warm coconut cream is ridiculously good. Like, you would not even call it “the vegan one,” it is just good.
My tips if you go vegan:
Do not overbake. Vegan cakes can dry out faster, and dry cake cracks when rolled.
Roll it warm, same as the classic version. That part does not change.
Chill before frosting. It helps everything set so you do not smear filling all over the outside by accident.
And yes, Easy Christmas Yule Log Cake — Buche de Noel can be adapted this way with a bit of planning. The decorating is exactly the same, which is the fun part anyway.
Common Questions
1) How do I stop my Yule log from cracking?
Roll it while it is warm, do not overbake it, and dust the towel with powdered sugar so it does not stick. Small cracks can be covered with frosting, so do not panic.
2) Can I make it the day before?
Yes. I actually prefer it that way. Make the sponge, roll and cool it, then wrap it well. Fill and frost the next day for the freshest look.
3) What filling works best?
Whipped cream is classic, chocolate whipped cream is even better, and dairy free whipped topping works if needed. Just avoid super runny fillings that will squeeze out when you roll.
4) Do I need a special pan?
A rimmed baking sheet is ideal because the cake needs to be thin. If your pan is smaller, the cake bakes thicker and is more likely to crack.
5) How do I store leftovers?
Keep it in the fridge, covered, for up to 3 days. For cleaner slices, let it sit at room temp for 10 minutes before serving.
