Easy Watermelon Basil Lemonade — Summer is basically my answer to those hot afternoons when you want something cold right now, but you do not want to babysit a complicated recipe. I started making it after one too many store bought lemonades that tasted more like sugar than fruit. This one is bright, juicy, and super refreshing, and the basil makes it feel a little special without being fussy. If you have a watermelon that is taking over your counter, this is the best way to use it. And yes, it tastes like summer in a glass.
What you need to make watermelon cucumber basil lemonade
I know the main idea you came for is Easy Watermelon Basil Lemonade — Summer vibes, but I am going to be real with you, the cucumber is the little bonus ingredient that makes people go, wait, what is in this? It adds that clean, spa water freshness without tasting like salad. Basil is the aromatic punch, and lemon keeps everything crisp.
Here is what I use most of the time. You can adjust sweetness and tartness easily, so do not stress about being exact.
- Watermelon (seedless is easiest): cold and cubed
- Cucumber: peeled if the skin is thick or waxy
- Fresh basil: a small handful, plus extra for garnish if you want
- Lemon juice: fresh squeezed tastes best, bottled works in a pinch
- Sweetener: simple syrup, honey, or sugar, depending on what you keep around
- Cold water or sparkling water: to loosen it up and make it sippable
- Ice: lots of it
- Optional: pinch of salt (tiny amount, but it makes the fruit taste louder)
If you want a super simple version without cucumber, I have another summer staple that is great for parties: easy watermelon lemonade. I make that one when I am short on herbs and still want a big pitcher situation.
One small tip from my own trial and error: if your watermelon is not very sweet, do not toss it. Just add a little more sweetener and a pinch of salt. It brings it back to life.
Equipment needed for this watermelon cucumber drink recipe
You do not need anything fancy, but the right tool makes the whole thing faster. I usually make this in under 10 minutes, and that includes me hunting for my blender lid.
Here is the setup that works best:
Blender is the main thing. A standard blender is perfect. An immersion blender can work if you have a deep container, but it will be a little messier. You will also want a fine mesh strainer if you prefer a smoother drink. Some people love a little pulp, so you can totally skip straining if that is your style.
You will also need a cutting board, knife, and a big pitcher. If you do not have a pitcher, use a large bowl or even a big measuring jug, then pour into glasses. No shame. I have done it.
When I am in the mood for a frozen texture instead of a pourable lemonade, I switch to a slush. This one is my go to on extra hot days: easy frozen lemonade slushie. It is like the lazy summer cousin of this recipe.
How to make watermelon lemonade
Okay, this is the part where it all comes together. The biggest secret is chilling your fruit first. Cold watermelon means you need less ice, and less ice means your drink stays flavorful instead of watery.
Step by step, the way I actually do it
1) Blend the fruit and cucumber. Add cubed watermelon and cucumber to your blender. Start with about 4 cups watermelon and about 1 cup cucumber. Blend until smooth.
2) Add basil and lemon. Toss in a handful of basil leaves and a good squeeze of lemon juice. Blend again for just a few seconds. You want the basil to perfume the drink, not turn it bitter from over blending.
3) Taste, then sweeten. This is where you make it yours. If your lemons are super tart, you might want more sweetener. If your watermelon is super ripe, you might not need much at all. Add sweetener a little at a time, blend briefly, and taste again.
4) Strain if you want it silky. Pour through a fine mesh strainer into a pitcher. Press gently with a spoon to help it through. If you like it rustic and juicy, skip this.
5) Add water and chill. Add a splash of cold water to thin it to your ideal lemonade vibe. If you want some sparkle, use sparkling water right before serving.
6) Serve it cold. Fill glasses with ice, pour, and slap a basil leaf on top. A thin lemon slice looks cute too, if you are feeling fancy.

Make this watermelon cucumber basil lemonade into a cocktail!
This is one of my favorite things about this recipe. It is great as a zero proof drink, but it also plays very nicely with alcohol if you are making a weekend pitcher for friends. Easy Watermelon Basil Lemonade — Summer style turns into a cocktail without much effort, and you can keep it light.
Simple cocktail options
Vodka: Clean, neutral, and lets the watermelon shine. Add 1.5 ounces per glass, then top with the lemonade.
Gin: If you like herbal notes, gin plus basil is a really good match. Same amount, 1.5 ounces per glass.
Tequila blanco: This is surprisingly good, especially if you salt the rim lightly. It turns it into a patio sipper fast.
Rum: Light rum works if you want something a little more tropical.
My personal rule: do not add alcohol to the full pitcher unless you know it will all get consumed pretty quickly. If it sits too long, the basil flavor can get a bit intense, and the ice melts and waters it down. I prefer spiking individual glasses so everyone can choose their own vibe.

Little serving ideas that make it feel special
You do not need to overdo it, but these small touches really make this drink feel like a treat:
Serve in a glass with lots of ice, not a tiny cup. The whole point is refreshing.
Add a basil sprig and gently clap it between your hands before garnishing. It wakes up the scent.
Use sparkling water right before serving if you want a bubbly version.
Do a quick fruit skewer with watermelon cubes for kids or parties.
Common Questions
Can I make this ahead of time?
Yes. Blend it and keep it in the fridge for up to 24 hours. For the best flavor, add sparkling water right before serving and stir well.
Do I have to use cucumber?
Nope. It is optional, but it adds a clean fresh taste. If you skip it, you may want a tiny extra squeeze of lemon to keep it bright.
Why does my basil taste bitter?
Usually it is from over blending or using older basil. Blend basil just a few seconds, and use fresh leaves that still look perky.
How do I make it less sweet?
Add more lemon juice or a splash of cold water. If it is already sweet from the watermelon, you can skip added sweetener completely.
Can I freeze leftovers?
Yes. Pour into ice cube trays, freeze, and blend the cubes later for a quick slushy. It is a great way to save extra watermelon.
