How to Cook Shrimp in the Air Fryer Step by Step

What You’ll Need

• 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined, tails on or off
• 2 teaspoons olive oil
• 1 teaspoon cornstarch for light crisp edges
• 1 teaspoon paprika
• 1/2 teaspoon sea salt, plus more to taste
• 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
• 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
• 3 to 4 garlic cloves, finely minced
• 1 tablespoon lemon juice, plus extra lemon wedges for serving
• 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
• Optional: a pinch of red pepper flakes for heat

Step-by-Step Directions

• Prep the shrimp: If frozen, thaw completely and pat very dry. Extra moisture causes steaming instead of crisping.
• Season: In a bowl, toss shrimp with olive oil, cornstarch, paprika, salt, and pepper. The cornstarch gives those lovely crisp edges without breading.
• Preheat: Heat the air fryer to 400°F. A hot basket helps with browning.
• Cook: Arrange shrimp in a single layer. Air fry 6 to 8 minutes, flipping halfway. Shrimp are done when they curl into a loose C-shape and turn opaque with a light pink color.
• Make the garlic butter: While the shrimp cook, melt butter in a small pan over low heat. Stir in garlic and cook 30 to 60 seconds until fragrant, not browned. Add lemon juice, parsley, and red pepper flakes if using.
• Toss and finish: Transfer hot shrimp to a bowl and pour the garlic butter over the top. Toss quickly so the butter coats every nook and cranny. Taste and add a pinch more salt or lemon if needed.

Why You Will Love Air-Fryer Garlic Shrimp

I could give you a dozen reasons, but here are the big ones. First, the air fryer locks in juiciness while giving the edges that slight crisp bite we all crave. Second, this method is almost impossible to mess up. You’re not juggling a hot skillet and butter splatter. Third, the flavor hits hard in the best way. Fresh garlic, melty butter, bright lemon, and a whisper of paprika make every bite feel restaurant-worthy.

Fourth, cleanup is minimal. One bowl, one basket. Fifth, it’s flexible. Toss it on pasta, a salad, or rice, or eat it straight from the bowl. I’ve used this base recipe for shrimp tacos and even a quick shrimp scampi bowl. Finally, it’s fast. We’re talking a legit dinner in minutes. When friends drop by, I can whip up Crispy Garlic Butter Air Fryer Shrimp while we chat and no one waits long.

“Tried this on a busy weeknight and it tasted like a special occasion. Perfectly seasoned and so juicy. Adding it to my regular rotation.”

If you want to plan a full-on seafood night, you could pair this with something fun like these grilled lobster tails with herb garlic butter. Talk about a crowd-pleaser.

What to Serve with Air-Fried Garlic Butter Shrimp?

Let’s keep this simple and satisfying. Here are a few sides and pairings that always work with the buttery, garlicky vibe of the shrimp.

• Crusty bread or this quick air fryer cheesy garlic bread for dunking in the sauce.
• Steamed jasmine rice or lemony couscous for a light base.
• Fresh green salad with a squeeze of lemon and olive oil.
• Buttery noodles or angel hair pasta with a sprinkle of parmesan.
• Roasted veggies like asparagus, broccoli, or zucchini.
• Brunch spin: eggs over easy and crispy breakfast potatoes.

When I’m going casual, I serve the shrimp right out of the bowl with lemon wedges and a quick salad. If I want a cozy dinner, I toss them over pasta and let the garlic butter do the saucing. Either way, the shrimp shine.

Tips for Making Air Fryer Garlic Butter Shrimp

Size matters. Large or extra-large shrimp cook best in the air fryer. Smaller shrimp can overcook quickly, so shave a minute off the time if you’re using them.

Dry the shrimp really well. This is how you get that lightly crisp exterior. Damp shrimp steam, and steamed shrimp stay soft.

Don’t crowd the basket. Give the shrimp some space so the hot air can circulate and brown the edges. If you double the recipe, cook in batches.

Use gentle heat for the garlic. You want fragrant garlic, not browned or bitter garlic. Melt the butter low and slow, add the garlic, and pull it off the heat as soon as it smells amazing.

Add lemon at the end. When you cook citrus too long, the flavor dulls. A quick squeeze at the finish brightens everything up.

Check for doneness by shape and color. Perfect shrimp curl into a loose C. If they curl all the way into an O, they’re overcooked. They should be opaque, pink, and tender.

How to Make Garlic Butter Sauce for Shrimp?

The sauce is simple, but a few small choices make it memorable. I use four tablespoons of butter for one pound of shrimp, which creates enough gloss to coat without feeling heavy. Mince fresh garlic very fine so it softens and perfumes the butter quickly. I like three to four cloves, but you can adjust based on how bold you want it.

Set a small pan over low heat and melt the butter. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 to 60 seconds. If the garlic starts to sizzle hard, pull the pan off the heat. Add a tablespoon of fresh lemon juice and a tablespoon of chopped parsley. Taste. If you want a bit of heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes. I also add a small pinch of salt to sharpen the flavors, especially if I used unsalted butter.

Pour the warm sauce over the hot shrimp right away. The heat helps the shrimp drink up the flavor. Toss, taste, and adjust the salt and lemon. You want a balance of buttery richness, garlicky depth, and bright citrus. This is where the magic happens for Crispy Garlic Butter Air Fryer Shrimp. I sometimes grate a little lemon zest over the top too, which makes the whole kitchen smell like sunshine and seafood.

Common Questions

Do I need to thaw frozen shrimp first?
Yes. Thaw completely and pat dry for the best texture. If you cook from frozen, the shrimp release water and won’t crisp nicely.

How long do leftovers keep?
Up to 2 days in the fridge. Reheat briefly in the air fryer at 350°F for 2 to 3 minutes or in a skillet over low heat with a dab of butter.

Can I use pre-cooked shrimp?
You can, but reduce the air fryer time to 2 to 3 minutes just to warm them. The flavor is still good, but raw shrimp give better texture.

Is cornstarch required?
No, but it helps create that light, crisp edge. If you skip it, still pat the shrimp very dry and preheat well.

What size shrimp should I buy?
Large or extra-large, labeled 16/20 or 21/25 per pound. They’re easier to cook evenly and stay juicy.
