Important Ingredients for Bread Bowls

You do not need a long ingredient list, but you do need a few things that actually matter. The biggest thing is giving the dough enough time so it bakes up chewy and sturdy. Nobody wants a bread bowl that collapses halfway through dinner.

What you will need

• Sourdough starter: Active and bubbly is best. If your starter is sleepy, your bowls will be dense.
• Bread flour: This helps give that chewy bakery bite and stronger structure.
• Water: Simple, but measure it. Too much water makes shaping harder.
• Salt: Do not skip it. It makes the flavor pop.
• A little olive oil (optional): I like a tiny bit for a softer crumb.
• Egg wash (optional): For a deeper golden crust.

If you are newer to sourdough, I have to say, it helps to start with a simple dough method first. This beginner friendly guide is a great confidence booster: easy sourdough bread beginner no knead. Once you have that basic feel for sourdough, bread bowls feel way less intimidating.

One more practical note, size matters. I aim for bowls that are about 6 inches wide. Big enough to hold soup, not so big that they take forever to bake. If you want smaller bowls for kids or for a soup tasting night, just divide the dough into smaller portions and watch the bake time.

How to Make Bread Bowls Step-by-Step

Okay, here is the part that sounds like a lot, but really is not. Most of the time is hands off. You are just letting dough do dough things.

My easy timeline for success

1. Mix the dough. In a big bowl, stir together your active sourdough starter, water, and flour until it looks like a shaggy dough. Add salt and mix again. It will look rough, that is normal.

2. Rest and fold. Cover the bowl and let it sit for 30 minutes. Then do a few stretch and folds. I do this 2 to 4 times over the next couple of hours when I remember. You do not have to be perfect about it. Each time, the dough gets smoother and stronger.

3. Let it rise. Cover and let it rise until it looks puffed up and airy. The time depends on your kitchen. Warmer kitchens go faster. Cooler kitchens take longer. I look for the dough to feel alive and slightly jiggly when you move the bowl.

4. Divide and shape. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide into 4 equal pieces for big bowls. Shape each piece into a tight ball by pulling the dough toward itself and rotating. This helps it bake up tall instead of spreading flat.

5. Second rise. Place the dough balls on parchment paper, cover, and let them puff again. Not forever, just until they look a bit bigger and softer.

6. Bake. Preheat your oven nice and hot. I bake at 425 F. If you have a Dutch oven or baking steel, great, but you do not need it. You can bake on a sheet pan. For a crispier crust, put a small pan of hot water on a lower rack to create steam.

7. Cool fully before cutting. This is the hardest part. If you cut too early, the inside can get gummy. Give them at least 45 minutes.

8. Hollow them out. Cut a circle in the top like a lid, then gently pull out the soft inside. Leave about 1 inch of bread around the sides and bottom so it holds soup without leaking.

When I first started making this Easy Panera Bread Bowl Copycat Sourdough, my mistake was hollowing too aggressively. I got greedy and removed too much bread, and then my bowl got soggy fast. Now I leave a thicker wall, and it holds up way better.

I made these for a family soup night and everyone ate the bowl, even my picky teenager. They held up perfectly and tasted like the ones from the cafe, maybe even better.

By the way, if you are planning a full cozy spread, this second link is the same soup I mentioned earlier and it really is made for bread bowls: easy chicken wild rice soup Panera copycat.

Serving Suggestions for Bread Bowls

This is where you can make it feel like your own little cafe night at home. The key is choosing fillings that are thick enough to sit nicely in the bowl and not instantly soak through.

• Creamy soups: Broccoli cheddar, potato soup, or creamy tomato are classics.
• Hearty stews: Beef stew or lentil stew works great.
• Chili: Especially if you like topping with cheese and green onions.
• Mac and cheese: Not traditional, but honestly, so good.
• Dips: Spinach artichoke dip for a party situation is a fun move.

I like to toast the hollowed bowls for 5 minutes before filling them. It creates a little barrier that helps keep the bread from getting soggy too quickly. Also, do not throw away the bread you pull out. Tear it into chunks and serve it on the side for dipping.

How to Store Leftover Bread Bowls

If you somehow end up with extra bread bowls, good for you because they store pretty well. I usually make a batch and use them across a couple meals.

Best storage tips

Keep them uncut if possible. Whole bowls stay fresher longer than hollowed bowls.

Room temperature: Store in a paper bag or loosely wrapped for 1 to 2 days. If you seal them tight in plastic, the crust softens a lot.

Refrigerator: I try not to, because it dries bread out, but it works for up to 4 days. Warm them in the oven to bring them back to life.

Freezer: This is the best option. Freeze the fully cooled bowls in a freezer bag. They keep well for up to 2 months.

Reheating: Bake at 350 F for about 10 to 15 minutes until warmed through. If they are frozen, add a little more time. I like to spritz with water first for a crisp crust.

Common Questions

Can I make bread bowls without a Dutch oven?

Yes. A sheet pan works fine. Add a small pan of hot water in the oven for steam if you want a crispier crust.

How do I keep the bread bowl from getting soggy?

Leave thicker walls when you hollow it out and toast the inside for a few minutes before filling. Also, thicker soups help.

How big should I make each bowl?

I like 4 bowls from one batch of dough for a classic cafe size. If you want smaller bowls, make 5 or 6 and shorten the bake time.

Can I use all purpose flour instead of bread flour?

You can, but the bowls may spread more and be a bit less chewy. If you only have all purpose flour, reduce the water slightly to make shaping easier.

Do I have to wait for the bread to cool before cutting the top?

It really helps. Cooling sets the crumb so it does not get gummy and it cuts cleaner.
