Korean Iced Coffee

Easy Dalgona Coffee — Whipped Korean Iced is my go to trick for those days when I want something fun and cafe style, but I do not want to leave the house or spend a bunch of money. If you have ever stared into your kitchen hoping a little magic would happen, this is that kind of recipe. It is sweet, creamy, and has that fluffy coffee cloud on top that makes you feel like you did something impressive. The best part is that it is made with pantry basics and takes just a few minutes of effort. I started making it during a super busy week, and now it is my little afternoon reset.

What is Dalgona Coffee?

Dalgona coffee is that whipped coffee drink that went viral for a good reason. You whip together instant coffee, sugar, and hot water until it turns thick and light, then spoon it over cold milk. When you stir it in, you get a creamy iced coffee with a caramel like bitterness that is seriously satisfying.

The name comes from a Korean street snack called dalgona, which is a honeycomb toffee. The drink does not actually contain that candy, but people say the flavor vibe feels similar, especially if you like sweet coffee drinks.

I love serving it when friends come over because it looks fancy with almost no extra work. And if you are already in a Korean food mood, I always point people toward a simple dinner like this easy bibimbap Korean rice bowl with ground beef so the whole day feels like a little theme.

“I tried this after seeing it all over social media and I cannot believe I made something that tastes like a coffee shop drink at home. The foam stayed fluffy for ages.”

How to Make Dalgona Coffee (Whipped Coffee)

Ingredients and what you will need

This is one of those recipes where the ingredient list is almost too simple. The only “must have” detail is that you need instant coffee. Regular ground coffee will not whip the same way.

• 2 tablespoons instant coffee
• 2 tablespoons sugar
• 2 tablespoons hot water
• 1 cup cold milk (any kind)
• Ice cubes

Tools wise, you can use a whisk and some patience, or a hand mixer if you want it done fast. I usually grab my hand mixer because I am impatient and I like the extra thick foam.

Step by step directions

1) Add instant coffee, sugar, and hot water to a medium bowl.

2) Whisk or beat until it turns from dark and drippy to light and fluffy. You are looking for a texture like soft whipped cream. With a hand mixer it usually takes 2 to 4 minutes. By hand, it can take closer to 8 to 12 minutes depending on your speed.

3) Fill a glass with ice and pour in your cold milk.

4) Spoon the whipped coffee on top. Take a photo if you are the type. I always am.

5) Stir before drinking so the foam blends into the milk, unless you like sipping through the layers.

Once you get the hang of it, Easy Dalgona Coffee — Whipped Korean Iced becomes a repeat recipe. It is also a fun one to make while you are waiting for something else to chill, like this easy acai bowl homemade and topped if you are in a breakfast mood.

Tips for Perfecting Your Dalgona Coffee

If your first try is not perfect, do not stress. Mine was a little flat the first time because I rushed it. Here are the things that actually matter.

Use equal parts. The classic ratio is 1:1:1 for instant coffee, sugar, and hot water. It is the easiest way to remember it and it works.

Hot water helps. You do not need boiling water, just hot enough to dissolve everything quickly so the whipping starts smooth.

Give it time. The foam usually hits a point where it suddenly turns lighter and thicker. If it still looks glossy and runny, keep going.

Choose your milk. Whole milk makes it taste extra creamy. Oat milk is amazing too. If you want it lighter, use whatever you normally drink.

Chill your glass. This is optional, but if you love an extra cold drink, pop the glass in the freezer for a few minutes. It makes it feel more like a cafe iced drink.

Common Mistakes When Making Dalgona Coffee

This is the part where most people get annoyed and think the recipe “does not work.” It does work, but a few small things can throw it off.

Mistake 1: Using regular coffee
Instant coffee is the key. If you use espresso powder, it might work depending on the brand, but regular ground coffee will not whip into that fluffy topping.

Mistake 2: Not whipping long enough
It is easy to stop too early because it looks kind of thick. If it is still dark and falling off the whisk in ribbons, keep going until it turns noticeably paler and holds its shape.

Mistake 3: Skipping the sugar
You can reduce the sugar a bit, but it helps stabilize the foam. If you cut it too much, the whip can turn thin and collapse faster.

Mistake 4: Using cold water
Cold water makes it harder to dissolve and whip. Warm it up and your life gets easier.

Mistake 5: Pouring the milk too fast when stirring
This is small, but if you stir aggressively right away, the foam can splash and you lose the pretty top. I usually stir gently at first, then mix well.

Variations of Dalgona Coffee

Once you can make the basic version, it is really fun to play with it. Here are a few easy spins that still keep that signature whipped top.

Mocha dalgona
Add 1 teaspoon cocoa powder to the coffee mixture. It gets a little deeper and more dessert like.

Vanilla dalgona
Add a splash of vanilla to the milk, or a tiny bit to the whipped coffee. It makes it taste extra “coffee shop.”

Salted dalgona
Add a pinch of salt to the whipped coffee. It sounds odd but it makes the coffee flavor pop.

Decaf-ish version
Use half instant coffee and half decaf instant coffee if you want the vibe without going full caffeine.

Extra creamy dessert cup
Swap milk for cold half and half, then top with a dusting of cocoa or cinnamon. This is basically a treat.

And if you are planning a whole coffee themed day, a slice of something fancy like this easy opera cake French coffee almond is a really fun pairing, especially if you are hosting.

Common Questions

Can I make Easy Dalgona Coffee — Whipped Korean Iced without a mixer?
Yes. Use a whisk and plan for a few extra minutes. It is a little workout, but it works.

Why is my whipped coffee not getting fluffy?
Most of the time it is because the coffee is not instant, the water is not hot, or it just needs more whipping time.

How long does the foam last?
It holds up surprisingly well for a couple of hours. It is best fresh, but you can whip it, cover it, and keep it at room temp for a bit if you are prepping.

Can I reduce the sugar?
You can, but do not cut it too much or the foam can get looser. If you want it less sweet, try reducing sugar a little and using more milk or ice.

Do I have to stir it before drinking?
You do not have to, but stirring gives you that smooth iced coffee taste in every sip. If you like layers, sip it slowly and stir as you go.
