game day sliders

Easy Game Day Sliders — Mini Party Sandwich are my go to move when people are coming over and I do not want to be stuck in the kitchen all night. You know that moment when the game is on, everyone is hungry, and you suddenly realize chips are not going to cut it? This is the fix. They are warm, cheesy, buttery on top, and you can pull them apart like little pillow sandwiches. I make them when I need something that feels fun but is still super simple.

Why You’ll Love It

First, these sliders are just plain easy. You line them up, layer the good stuff, bake, and suddenly you look like the person who has it all together at game day.

Second, they are the kind of food that makes people hover near the pan. The tops get golden, the cheese gets melty, and the whole tray smells like a party.

Third, they scale beautifully. Feeding four? Great. Feeding fourteen? Also great. Just grab another pack of rolls and keep going.

Key Ingredients in Ham and Cheese Sliders

This is not a fussy recipe. It is more about getting a few solid ingredients that work together and letting the oven do the rest.

What you will need

• Slider rolls like Hawaiian rolls or any soft dinner rolls
• Deli ham sliced, not too thick so it stacks nicely
• Cheese Swiss is classic, but cheddar or provolone also works
• Butter for that glossy, flavorful top
• Dijon mustard for a little tang in the butter sauce
• Garlic powder and onion powder for cozy flavor
• Poppy seeds optional, but they look cute and add a tiny crunch

One quick note on ham. If you can, grab a ham that is not overly watery. Super wet deli ham can make the bottoms a little soggy. Not the end of the world, but it is worth picking a good one.

How to Make Ham and Cheese Sliders

I usually do this in a 9 by 13 baking dish, but anything similar works. Here is how it goes in real life, not in a perfectly staged cooking show.

Simple step by step

• Preheat your oven to 350 F.
• Slice the whole slab of rolls in half horizontally, keeping them connected if you can.
• Place the bottom half in the baking dish.
• Layer the ham evenly across the rolls.
• Add the cheese on top of the ham. I like to overlap slices so every bite gets cheese.
• Put the top half of the rolls back on.
• Melt butter and stir in Dijon, garlic powder, onion powder, and poppy seeds if using.
• Brush or spoon that butter mixture all over the tops.
• Cover with foil and bake about 15 minutes, then uncover and bake 5 to 8 minutes more until the tops are golden.

When they come out, let them sit for about 3 to 5 minutes. It helps the cheese settle a bit so the sliders do not slide around as much when you cut or pull them apart.

“I brought these to our watch party and people asked for the recipe before halftime. The buttery tops were unreal, and the tray was gone in ten minutes.”

If you are building out a whole party spread, these sliders pair really well with a snacky board like this easy grazing board holiday party spread. It makes the table look loaded without stressing you out.

Tips for Baking Sliders

This is where little tweaks make a big difference, especially if you are making Easy Game Day Sliders — Mini Party Sandwich for a crowd and want them to come out right the first time.

Cover first, uncover later. The foil step matters. It warms everything through and melts the cheese without burning the tops. Then you finish uncovered for that golden color.

Do not drown the tops. You want the butter mixture to coat the rolls, not turn into a puddle. If you have extra, save it and brush a little more on after baking if you want.

Mind the cheese placement. If you can, tuck cheese slightly away from the edges so it does not all run out and crisp onto the pan. A little crispy cheese is good, but you want most of it inside.

Make ahead tip. You can assemble the sliders earlier in the day, cover, and refrigerate. Add the butter topping right before baking for best texture.

And if you are doing a morning game or brunch situation, these easy breakfast sliders with egg, cheese, and sausage are another fun tray bake idea. I like having both options depending on the crowd.

What to Serve with Ham and Cheese Sliders

Easy Game Day Sliders — Mini Party Sandwich are pretty rich and satisfying, so I like to balance them with something crisp or fresh. You do not need a ton, just a few easy sides.

Here are my go to picks:

• Pickles or pickle spears for a salty crunch
• Potato chips or kettle chips, the classic no effort side
• Coleslaw for something cool and tangy
• Fruit tray especially grapes or pineapple to cut the richness
• Simple salad with a light vinaigrette

If you want to make your table look extra inviting, add a big board situation. I love pulling ideas from this easy grazing board holiday party spread since you can mix sweet, salty, and crunchy stuff all in one place.

Common Questions

Can I use turkey instead of ham?

Yes. Turkey and Swiss is great. Just choose deli turkey that is not too wet, and you are good.

What cheese works best?

Swiss is the classic, but cheddar, provolone, or mozzarella all work. For extra flavor, try mixing two cheeses.

How do I keep the bottoms from getting soggy?

Use thicker rolls, avoid watery deli meat, and do not overload with sauce. Also, baking uncovered at the end helps.

Can I make these in advance?

Yep. Assemble up to a day ahead, cover and chill. Add the butter topping right before baking.

How many sliders should I plan per person?

For a party with lots of snacks, plan 1 to 2 per person. If this is the main food, 2 to 3 per person is safer.
