Customizable Snacks

Easy Chocolate Covered Oreos — Party Treat are my go to move when I need something cute, chocolatey, and low stress for a get together. You know that moment when you realize you said you would bring dessert and the party is tomorrow? Yep, this is for that. It looks like you spent time decorating, but honestly it is mostly dipping and a little sprinkle therapy. I make these for birthdays, game nights, and holiday trays, and they disappear faster than anything fancy. If you have a bag of Oreos and some chocolate, you are basically already done.

Why You Will Love This Recipe

First, it is ridiculously simple. The whole point is to make something that feels special without turning your kitchen into a disaster zone. Easy Chocolate Covered Oreos — Party Treat also travel well, which is huge if you are bringing sweets to a potluck or school event.

Second, they are customizable. You can go cute and colorful with sprinkles, or keep it classy with a drizzle. I also love that you can match the theme of your party without learning any new baking skills.

Third, they are a true crowd pleaser. People love Oreos. People love chocolate. Put them together and everyone acts like you unlocked a secret dessert level.

If you are building a dessert table, I like pairing these with something soft and creamy like a trifle. This chocolate cheesecake trifle is one of those recipes that looks fancy but is actually pretty easy too.

Ingredients Needed

You do not need a long list. Try to keep it simple, and buy decent chocolate if you can. It makes dipping smoother and the final bite tastes better.

Quick shopping list

• Oreos or any sandwich cookie you like
• Chocolate for melting: chocolate chips, melting wafers, or chopped chocolate bars
• Optional: 1 to 2 teaspoons coconut oil or shortening (helps thin the chocolate and makes it smoother)
• Sprinkles, crushed candy, mini chocolate chips, chopped nuts, or flaky salt for topping
• Optional: white chocolate for drizzling

A quick note on chocolate: if you use regular chocolate chips, it still works, but they can melt a little thicker. That is when the coconut oil trick saves the day. If you use melting wafers, they are designed for dipping and set up nicely.

For another fun chocolate treat idea, I always keep this one bookmarked for holiday trays: Christmas chocolate bark. It has the same low effort, big payoff vibe.

How To Make Chocolate Covered Oreos

This is the part where you realize you can totally do this. The biggest thing is giving yourself a little space on the counter and lining up your toppings before you start dipping. Once the cookies are wet with chocolate, you want to decorate fast.

Step 1: Prep your space. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper. Set out your sprinkles and toppings in small bowls. If you are using a drizzle, have that chocolate ready too.

Step 2: Melt the chocolate. Put your chocolate in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave in 20 to 30 second bursts, stirring each time. Stop when it is mostly melted, then stir until smooth. If it feels too thick, stir in a tiny bit of coconut oil.

Step 3: Dip the Oreos. Drop one Oreo into the bowl and use a fork to flip it and coat it. Lift it out with the fork and tap the fork gently on the side of the bowl to let extra chocolate drip off. Then slide it onto the parchment.

Step 4: Decorate. Add sprinkles right away. If you wait too long, the chocolate starts to set and the toppings will not stick. If you want a drizzle, let the base layer set first, then drizzle on top.

Step 5: Let them set. Let the cookies set at room temp until firm, or pop the tray in the fridge for about 10 to 15 minutes if you are in a hurry.

When I am making a big batch, I like to work in small groups of 6 to 8 cookies at a time. Dip, top, repeat. It keeps the process calm and you get prettier results.

I brought these to my sister’s baby shower and people kept asking where I bought them. Nobody believed I made them the night before while watching TV.

If you are on a cookie kick, you might also love baking something soft and fudgy like chocolate crinkle cookies for a different texture on the dessert table.

Recipe Tips

These are the little things I have learned after making Easy Chocolate Covered Oreos — Party Treat a bunch of times for different events. They are small, but they make the whole process smoother.

Keep everything dry. Even a tiny drop of water can make melted chocolate seize and get grainy. Make sure your bowl and spoon are totally dry.

Use a fork for dipping. A fork is the easiest tool. The extra chocolate drips through the tines and you do not get big puddles around the cookie.

Do toppings first, drizzle second. Sprinkles and candy bits need wet chocolate to stick. Drizzles look best when the base layer is set.

Let them set fully before packaging. If you stack them too soon, the tops can smudge. If I am in a rush, I chill them briefly, then let them sit a few minutes so they do not get condensation in a container.

Make a drink to go with them. If you are serving these at a winter party or movie night, a warm mug of homemade drinking chocolate is so cozy with the crunchy cookie bite.

Recipe Variations

This is where you can have fun and make them look like they came from a bakery. Easy Chocolate Covered Oreos — Party Treat are basically a blank canvas.

White chocolate and peppermint: Dip in white chocolate, then sprinkle crushed candy canes on top. Great for December parties.

Birthday cake style: Use white chocolate and rainbow sprinkles. If you want extra sparkle, add a pinch of edible glitter.

Dark chocolate and flaky salt: This one feels fancy with almost no effort. Just a tiny pinch of salt on each cookie is perfect.

Two tone dip: Dip one side in dark chocolate and the other in white chocolate. Let the first side set before dipping the other.

Drizzle and crunch: Dip in milk chocolate, drizzle with white chocolate, then add crushed pretzels or chopped peanuts.

If you are making a holiday cookie box, you could mix these with something delicate like chocolate spritz cookies for variety.

Common Questions

Do I need special melting chocolate?
No. Melting wafers are easy, but regular chocolate chips work too. If your chocolate is thick, add a tiny bit of coconut oil and stir until smooth.

How far ahead can I make them?
I usually make them 1 to 3 days ahead. Keep them in an airtight container at cool room temperature, or in the fridge if your kitchen is warm.

How do I store Easy Chocolate Covered Oreos — Party Treat?
Store them in a single layer if you can, or place parchment between layers. This keeps the tops looking nice and prevents sticking.

Can I freeze chocolate covered Oreos?
Yes, but I prefer them fresh. If you freeze them, wrap well and thaw in the fridge first, then bring to room temp so condensation does not mess with the chocolate.

Why is my chocolate not smooth?
Most of the time it is overheated or got a little water in it. Melt slowly, stir often, and make sure everything is dry.
