Easy Chai Latte Iced Spiced Homemade is my go to drink when it is too hot for coffee, but I still want something cozy and spiced. You know that moment when you open the fridge and you want a treat, not just water, but you also do not want to spend six dollars at a cafe? Same. This recipe is the fix because it is quick, forgiving, and honestly tastes like the real deal. I make it all the time in the afternoon when I need a pick me up but I am not trying to get jittery. If you have milk, tea, and a few warm spices, you are already halfway there.
What is an Iced Chai Tea Latte?
An iced chai tea latte is basically chilled chai tea mixed with milk, poured over ice, and usually sweetened a little. Chai is black tea plus spices like cinnamon, ginger, and cloves. When it is iced, it becomes this super refreshing drink that still feels comforting because of the spices.
Most coffee shops use a chai concentrate or syrup. At home, you can do something similar by brewing strong spiced tea and sweetening it while it is warm so everything dissolves. Then you cool it down, add milk, and you are done.
It is also one of those drinks that plays nice with other flavors. If you like matcha too, you might also want my other iced drink obsession, easy iced matcha latte coffee shop copycat. Different vibe, same cold and creamy happiness.
One more thing I love about chai is how it smells while it brews. It makes the kitchen feel like you are baking something, even if you are just making a drink.
How to Make an Iced Chai Latte at Home
I keep this method simple and repeatable. If you can boil water and stir, you can make this. The main trick is brewing the chai strong enough so it does not taste watery once you add ice and milk.
My easy step by step method
Here is how I do it on a regular day:
- Bring water to a gentle simmer.
- Add black tea and spices. Let it steep until it is strong and fragrant.
- Strain it, then stir in your sweetener while it is still warm.
- Cool it down. You can chill it in the fridge or pour it into a glass over lots of ice if you are impatient like me.
- Add milk, stir, taste, and adjust sweetness.
If you are short on time, you can brew it in the morning and keep it in a jar in the fridge. Then you can make an iced latte in about thirty seconds later. I do this when I am meal prepping, like when I have something cozy going in the kitchen such as easy lamb curry indian slow cooked spiced. Spiced food plus spiced drink feels like a tiny life upgrade.
“I tried this iced chai at home and it actually tasted better than my usual coffee shop one. The spices were warm and fresh, and the chai ice cubes tip was genius.”
Also, quick honesty: your first batch might be too strong or too mild. That is normal. Adjust it next time. Once you find your sweet spot, Easy Chai Latte Iced Spiced Homemade becomes totally automatic.
Ingredients Needed
This is the pantry friendly part. You probably already have most of this, and if you do not, it is still a short list. I like using whole spices when I have them, but ground spices are fine too. Just keep the amounts small because ground spices can get intense fast.
What you need for one large glass
- Water
- Black tea, 2 tea bags or 2 teaspoons loose leaf
- Milk of choice, dairy or non dairy
- Sweetener, like honey, sugar, maple syrup, or simple syrup
- Cinnamon, a small stick or a pinch ground
- Ginger, a few slices or a pinch ground
- Cardamom, optional but amazing
- Cloves, just a tiny bit
- Ice
A little tip from someone who has overdone cloves before: go easy. Like, two cloves is plenty for a single serving. You can always add more next time, but you cannot un clove a drink.
And if you are the type who loves spicy flavor in general, you might also like dinners with big seasoning energy such as easy jerk chicken jamaican spiced grilled. Different spice profile, but it scratches the same itch.
3 Variations: Dirty Chai, Dairy Free, Chai Ice Cubes
This is where you can make the drink fit your mood. Some days I want it extra bold. Some days I want it light and creamy. And sometimes I just want it to stay strong even after the ice melts.
1) Dirty chai (chai plus espresso)
If you want caffeine that actually does something, add one shot of espresso or about 2 ounces of strong coffee. Pour it in with the chai before the milk. It tastes like chai and coffee decided to be best friends.
2) Dairy free
Oat milk is my favorite here because it stays creamy and slightly sweet. Almond milk is lighter. Coconut milk is rich, but it can take over the spices, so I only use it when I am in the mood for that tropical vibe.
3) Chai ice cubes
This is my favorite little hack. Pour leftover chai into an ice cube tray and freeze it. Next time, use those cubes instead of plain ice. Your Easy Chai Latte Iced Spiced Homemade stays flavorful to the last sip, and that last sip is usually the best one.
On days when I am already cooking something comforting, I love pairing this with a snack. If you need a baked option that feels like a hug, check out easy pumpkin bread moist spiced fall loaf. Chai and pumpkin together just makes sense.
What Makes This Recipe So Good?
First, it is balanced. You get the tea flavor, the spice warmth, the creamy milk, and just enough sweetness. Second, it is flexible. You can make it stronger, lighter, sweeter, or more spicy without ruining it. Third, it is cheaper than buying it out, and that alone makes it taste better, at least in my brain.
I also like that it feels special without needing fancy tools. No frother required. No syrup bottles. Just a pot, a spoon, and a glass.
Another reason I keep coming back to Easy Chai Latte Iced Spiced Homemade is that you can make a small batch concentrate for the week. When I have a busy week, I love anything that makes my afternoons easier.
And yes, this drink totally works as a little treat next to something savory too. It sounds random, but I have had it while eating leftovers like easy beef picadillo cuban spiced ground beef, and the sweet spice combo is weirdly satisfying.
Common Questions
Can I use store bought chai concentrate?
Yes. If you already have one you like, use it. Just mix it with milk and ice. But if you want that fresher spice taste, brewing your own is worth it.
How do I keep it from tasting watered down?
Brew the chai strong, and try chai ice cubes. That one small change makes a big difference.
How long does homemade chai keep in the fridge?
About 3 to 4 days in a sealed jar. If it smells off or tastes flat, toss it and make a fresh batch.
What milk is best for an iced chai?
Whatever you love. Whole milk tastes richest. Oat milk is creamy and easy. Almond milk is lighter. There is no wrong choice.
Can I make it without black tea?
You can, but it becomes more like spiced milk. If you want caffeine free, use decaf black tea or rooibos tea instead.
