BLT Pasta Salad

Easy BLT Pasta Salad — Bacon Lettuce Tomato Summer Salad is my go to fix for those days when it’s way too hot to cook, but I still want something that tastes like a real meal. You know the vibe: everyone’s hungry, the kitchen feels stuffy, and you need a dish that works for lunch, dinner, or the backyard table. This one hits all the good stuff in a BLT, but it’s hearty enough to share. Plus, you can make it ahead, which honestly saves my sanity in summer. If you’ve ever stared into your fridge hoping dinner would magically appear, this is for you.

Easy Recipe for BLT Pasta Salad

I’ve made a lot of pasta salads over the years, and this one keeps earning a repeat spot because it’s simple and it tastes like comfort food. You get crispy bacon, juicy tomatoes, cool crunchy lettuce, and a creamy tangy dressing that pulls it all together. The key is not overthinking it.

Here’s what I usually grab. I’m keeping this practical, because that’s how I actually cook on a Tuesday.

• Pasta: short shapes work best, like rotini, bowties, or shells
• Bacon: crispy is the goal, chopped into bite sized pieces
• Lettuce: romaine holds up the best, but iceberg is classic BLT energy
• Tomatoes: cherry or grape tomatoes are less watery, but any ripe tomato works
• Red onion (optional): for a little bite
• Dressing: mayo plus a splash of vinegar or lemon, salt, pepper, and a tiny pinch of sugar

If you like to swap dressings depending on what’s in the fridge, you might also enjoy this easy pasta salad with Italian dressing. It’s a totally different mood, but it’s another solid cold summer pasta situation.

One more thing: I’m calling this Easy BLT Pasta Salad — Bacon Lettuce Tomato Summer Salad because that’s exactly what it is. No complicated extras needed, but you can always add things like shredded cheddar, diced avocado, or a handful of green onions if you’re feeling it.

How to Make BLT Pasta Salad Step-by-Step Photos

I’m going to walk you through it like I would if you were standing in my kitchen. This is one of those recipes where the order matters just a little, mostly so nothing gets soggy.

Step 1: Cook the pasta and cool it down

Boil your pasta in well salted water, then drain and rinse with cool water. I know some people hate rinsing pasta, but for pasta salad it helps stop the cooking and keeps it from turning into a sticky blob. Let it sit in the colander a minute to drain well.

Step 2: Cook the bacon until crisp

I cook mine in a skillet, then move it to a paper towel lined plate. Let it cool before mixing, because hot bacon plus dressing can get a little greasy. If you need a shortcut, baked bacon works too.

Step 3: Mix the dressing

In a big bowl, stir together mayo, a splash of vinegar or lemon juice, salt, pepper, and that tiny pinch of sugar. Taste it. If it’s too thick, loosen with a spoonful of milk or a little extra lemon. If you like extra tang, add more vinegar. This is one of those “make it yours” moments.

Step 4: Toss pasta, tomatoes, and bacon first

Add the cooled pasta, halved tomatoes, and bacon to the bowl. Toss until everything is coated. This is where it starts looking like something you want to eat right now.

Step 5: Add lettuce right before serving

This is the big trick. If you stir in lettuce too early, it wilts and loses that fresh crunch. I chop romaine and fold it in at the last minute, or I leave it on the side and let people add their own.

“I brought this to a family cookout and the bowl was basically scraped clean. Even my picky cousin who ‘doesn’t do salads’ went back for seconds.”

Recipe Success Tips!

These are the little things I’ve learned after making this more times than I can count. They’re not fancy tips, just stuff that makes the difference between “pretty good” and “why is this so addictive?”

Keep it crunchy: Add lettuce at the end, always. If you’re packing lunch, keep lettuce in a separate container and toss it in when you eat.

Use good tomatoes: When tomatoes are in season, this salad is unreal. If your tomatoes are kind of bland, add a pinch of salt directly to them before mixing. It wakes them up.

Don’t overdress: Start with less dressing than you think you need. You can always add more, but you can’t take it out. Pasta will soak up dressing as it sits, so you might add a small splash more right before serving.

Make bacon count: Crisp bacon gives you texture and that smoky salty bite. If it’s soft, it disappears. If you want a slightly lighter feel, use a little less bacon and add extra tomato.

If you love that bacon and creamy vibe, this easy broccoli salad with bacon sweet creamy dressing is another one that disappears fast at parties.

And yes, this recipe really does work for a crowd. Easy BLT Pasta Salad — Bacon Lettuce Tomato Summer Salad is the kind of bowl you set down on the table and people keep “taste testing” until it’s gone.

Storage/Serving Suggestions

This is one of the reasons I love making it. It’s flexible. You can serve it right away, stash it for later, and it still feels fresh if you store it the smart way.

• Fridge time: Store in an airtight container up to 3 days.
• Best method: Keep the lettuce separate if you know you’ll have leftovers.
• Refresh leftovers: Add a spoonful of mayo or a squeeze of lemon to bring it back to life.
• Serving idea: Serve chilled, but not ice cold. Let it sit out 10 minutes so flavors pop.
• Make it a meal: Add diced chicken, chopped hard boiled eggs, or shredded cheese.

For potlucks, I’ll often bring the salad already mixed except for the lettuce, then toss the lettuce in right before we eat. If you’re serving it alongside other picnic classics, this easy deviled egg pasta salad is a fun one to pair with it. It’s creamy, a little tangy, and totally in that comfort food lane.

Also, if you’re eating outside: keep the bowl in a cooler or nest it in a larger bowl filled with ice. Mayo based dressing is not something I gamble with in the heat.

Common Questions

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes. Make everything ahead, but wait to add the lettuce until right before serving so it stays crisp.

What pasta shape works best?

Rotini, bowties, or shells. Anything with little curves to hold dressing is a win.

How do I keep it from getting dry?

Pasta soaks up dressing as it sits. Save a little dressing to stir in later, or add a spoonful of mayo plus a splash of lemon before serving.

Can I use turkey bacon?

You can, but get it really crisp so you still get that crunch. The flavor will be a bit lighter than traditional bacon.

Is it okay to use store bought dressing?

Totally. Ranch works well, and a simple mayo based dressing is the closest to the classic BLT vibe. Just taste and adjust salt and pepper.
