Bang Bang Shrimp Pasta

Bang Bang Shrimp Pasta is my go to dinner for those nights when I want something that feels a little fancy, but I also do not want to babysit a complicated recipe. You know the vibe, you are hungry, the sink has a couple dishes already, and everyone is asking what is for dinner. This pasta hits that sweet spot with spicy creamy sauce, juicy shrimp, and noodles that soak up all that goodness. It tastes like a restaurant meal, but it is totally doable on a weeknight. If you love big flavor and quick comfort, you are in the right place.

How to Make Bang Bang Shrimp Pasta

I have made this recipe enough times that I have a little rhythm with it now. I cook the pasta first, then the shrimp, then I toss everything in the sauce and call it a win. The sauce is the star here, creamy, sweet, tangy, and spicy all at once. If you have ever had bang bang shrimp at a restaurant, you already know the flavor profile, but this version feels extra cozy because it is wrapped around pasta.

Here is the basic flow that keeps it easy and stress free:

• Boil pasta in salted water until just tender, then save a little pasta water before draining.
• Season shrimp and cook fast in a hot pan until pink and curled, then pull them out so they do not overcook.
• Whisk up the bang bang sauce and warm it gently in the same pan.
• Toss pasta in the sauce, loosen with a splash of pasta water if needed, then fold shrimp back in.
• Top with **green onions**, a little extra sauce drizzle, and maybe a pinch of chili flakes if you like heat.

A quick tip from my own trial and error: do not crank the heat when the sauce goes in. Mayo based sauces can separate if they get too hot too fast. I keep it at low heat, just enough to warm it and help it cling to the noodles.

Ingredients Needed for this Shrimp Recipe

This is one of those recipes where the ingredient list looks longer than it feels. Most of it is sauce stuff, and it is honestly just mixing. The best part is that you can tweak the heat level without breaking the recipe. If you like it mild, go easy on the sriracha. If you like it spicy, add a bit more and do not be shy.

Here is what I typically use for Bang Bang Shrimp Pasta at home:

For the pasta and shrimp

• 8 to 10 ounces pasta (spaghetti, linguine, or penne all work)
• 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
• 1 to 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 1 teaspoon garlic powder
• 1 teaspoon paprika
• Salt and pepper

For the bang bang sauce

• 1 half cup mayonnaise
• 1 third cup sweet chili sauce
• 1 to 2 tablespoons sriracha (adjust to taste)
• 1 teaspoon honey or sugar, optional if you want it slightly sweeter
• 1 to 2 teaspoons lime juice or rice vinegar for a little tang

Easy extras that make it even better

• Sliced green onions
• Chopped cilantro if you like it
• Sesame seeds
• A handful of shredded cabbage or coleslaw mix for crunch

I know mayo in a sauce can make some people pause, but trust me. Mixed with sweet chili sauce and sriracha, it turns into that creamy bang bang magic. If you want to lighten it up a little, you can do half mayo and half Greek yogurt, but the flavor will be a tiny bit tangier.

Also, if you are building out your pasta night rotation, I have been making this on repeat too: lemon garlic pasta. It is bright and simple and pairs well with seafood.

“I made this for my family and everyone went back for seconds. The sauce is seriously addictive and the shrimp stayed tender. This is now in our weeknight dinner list.”

Can I use frozen shrimp?

Yes, absolutely. I use frozen shrimp all the time for Bang Bang Shrimp Pasta, especially when I have not planned ahead. Frozen shrimp can be just as good as fresh as long as you thaw it the right way and do not overcook it.

My simple thawing options:

Fast thaw: Put the shrimp in a colander and run cold water over it for 5 to 8 minutes, tossing occasionally.

Overnight thaw: Put the shrimp in a bowl in the fridge the night before. This is the most hands off method.

After thawing, pat the shrimp dry with paper towels. This matters more than people think. If shrimp is wet, it steams instead of getting that quick sear, and you lose flavor. Then cook it in a hot pan and pull it as soon as it is pink and firm. Shrimp goes from perfect to rubbery in a blink, so stay close.

If you want another shrimp dinner that is super straightforward, I also like this one: easy Texas Roadhouse grilled shrimp recipe. Different vibe, still big flavor.

Bang Bang Shrimp Pasta Video

If you are the kind of cook who likes to watch a recipe once before jumping in, I get it. Seeing the sauce texture and shrimp doneness can make you feel way more confident. In a Bang Bang Shrimp Pasta video, these are the exact moments I would pay attention to:

What to look for while watching

1) The shrimp cook time. It should be quick, usually 1 to 2 minutes per side depending on size.

2) The sauce consistency. It should look creamy and clingy, not watery. If it looks too thick, that is where a splash of pasta water saves the day.

3) The final toss. You want the pasta coated, not drowning, and the shrimp added at the end so it stays juicy.

I also like videos because you can steal little ideas, like adding a handful of cabbage for crunch or finishing with lime zest. Those tiny touches make it feel like you really made something special, even though it took about 25 minutes.

On nights when I want a totally different comfort meal but still in the pasta family, I make this one: one pot creamy garlic pasta. It is cozy and low effort, which I always appreciate.

Recipe Ratings without Comment

I always like sharing a quick snapshot of how this recipe performs, especially if you are wondering if it is worth your shrimp. These ratings are based on my own repeats plus a few friends I have fed, the best kind of feedback.

Bang Bang Shrimp Pasta quick ratings

Flavor: 5 out of 5

Ease: 4.5 out of 5

Weeknight friendly: 5 out of 5

Kid friendly: 4 out of 5 (make it milder by reducing sriracha)

Leftovers: 4 out of 5 (best reheated gently, add a tiny splash of water)

One honest note: if you love super spicy food, you might want extra sriracha or even a pinch of cayenne. The base recipe has a kick, but it is more creamy spicy than full on fire.

Common Questions

1) What pasta shape works best?
Long noodles like linguine feel the most restaurant style, but penne is great because the sauce gets inside the tubes. Use what you have.

2) Can I make it without mayo?
You can swap mayo for plain Greek yogurt or a mix of yogurt and sour cream. It changes the flavor a bit, but it still works.

3) How do I keep shrimp from getting rubbery?
Cook it fast, pull it early, and add it back at the end just to warm through. Overcooking is the main culprit.

4) Can I add vegetables?
Yes. Quick cooking veggies like bell pepper strips, snap peas, spinach, or shredded cabbage are easy wins.

5) How do I reheat leftovers?
Low heat on the stove is best with a splash of water. Microwave works too, just do short bursts and stir so the sauce stays creamy.
