Preparation
- Bake the Texas toast according to package directions while cooking the meat.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef with diced onion and bell pepper, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain excess grease if necessary.
- Stir in minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds. Then add chili powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
- Add ketchup, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and brown sugar. Stir well and let it simmer for 8 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add a splash of water or broth if it gets too thick.
- Assemble by placing the Texas toast on a baking sheet and spooning the sloppy joe mixture on top. Add cheese if desired.
- Optionally, pop the tray back in the oven for a couple of minutes to melt the cheese.
Notes
This recipe is great for leftovers, and reheating is easy. Store the meat mixture separately from the toast to maintain crispness. Perfect for casual gatherings or weeknight dinners.
