Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
- In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and mix until combined.
Shaping and Baking
- Chill the dough in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
- Use a heart-shaped cutter, or a glass if you don’t have one, to cut out shapes.
- Place the cookie shapes on the prepared baking sheet and sprinkle with colored sugar.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes until edges are slightly golden.
- Let cool completely before adding chocolate hearts or candy melts on top.
Notes
Chill your dough well to prevent spreading. For colored sugar, sprinkle it on before baking. These cookies freeze well, so feel free to make a batch ahead of time.
