Potato Base
  • 2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes Russets can be used as a substitute
  • 1 medium Onion, thinly sliced Optional, adds sweetness
Sauce Ingredients
  • 4 tablespoons Butter For greasing and flavor
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour To thicken the sauce
  • 1 cup Milk All milk can be used, but heavy cream is recommended
  • 1 cup Heavy cream For a richer sauce
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced For flavor
  • to taste Salt Don't be shy with seasoning
  • to taste Black pepper Don't be shy with seasoning
  • 1 cup Cheese, shredded (optional) Cheddar or Gruyere for a cheesy top
Herbs (optional)
  • to taste Thyme or parsley For added flavor

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Butter a baking dish.
  3. In a saucepan, melt butter, stir in flour, then slowly whisk in milk and cream. Add garlic, salt, and pepper.
  4. Simmer until the sauce lightly thickens.
Layering & Baking
  1. Layer the sliced potatoes and onions in the prepared dish, spooning sauce over each layer.
  2. Repeat until all ingredients are used, finishing with sauce on top.
  3. Cover the dish with foil and bake for about 40-50 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender.
  4. Uncover and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, until the top is lightly golden.
Serving
  1. Let the dish rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For a twist, consider adding bacon, extra herbs, or a sprinkle of cheese before the final bake. Always slice the potatoes evenly and season in layers to enhance flavor.
