Ingredients

Cracker Base
  • 35-45 pieces Saltine crackers or buttery square crackers To cover a sheet pan
Caramel Layer
  • 1 cup Unsalted butter
  • 1 cup Brown sugar, packed Light or dark both work
  • 2 cups Chocolate chips Semi-sweet is classic, milk chocolate is sweeter
  • 1-2 teaspoons Flaky sea salt To taste
  • optional Chopped pecans or toasted almonds, crushed pretzels, or sprinkles Toppings

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil, then add parchment paper on top for easier cleanup.
  2. Arrange the crackers in a single layer on the baking sheet, edge to edge. Break a few to fill any gaps.
Making the Caramel
  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and brown sugar together. Stir until fully combined and bubbling.
  2. Once bubbling, let it boil for about 3 minutes, stirring gently to avoid scorching.
  3. Pour the hot caramel mixture over the arranged crackers, spreading it with a spatula to cover most of them.
  4. Bake for 5 minutes until the caramel looks bubbly all over.
  5. Remove the pan from the oven and sprinkle chocolate chips on top. Wait 2-3 minutes for them to melt, then spread into an even layer.
  6. Finish with flaky sea salt and any desired toppings.
  7. Let cool completely, then chill in the fridge for about 1 hour.
  8. Break into pieces and enjoy!

Notes

Line your pan well to prevent sticking, boil the caramel for a full 3 minutes, and chill before breaking for clean pieces. For variations, consider adding nuts, pretzels, or even drizzling peanut butter.
