Ingredients
  

For the Pretzel Dogs
  • 8 pieces hot dogs or sausages Use all-beef, smoked, chicken, or flavored sausages as preferred.
  • 1 pound pizza dough Store-bought or homemade dough is acceptable.
  • 6 cups water For the baking soda bath.
  • 1/4 cup baking soda Creates the pretzel flavor.
  • 1 piece egg For egg wash.
  • to taste coarse salt Pretzel salt if available.
  • optional sesame seeds, everything seasoning, shredded cheese These can be added for extra flavor.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly oil foil.
  2. Divide the pizza dough into 8 equal pieces, then roll each piece into a rope, about 12 to 14 inches long.
  3. Wrap each dough rope around a hot dog or sausage, spiraling it up and down, and press the ends to seal.
Baking Soda Bath
  1. Bring the water to a gentle boil in a large pot, then carefully add the baking soda.
  2. Dip each wrapped dog into the baking soda bath for about 20 to 30 seconds, flipping once with a slotted spatula.
Baking
  1. Transfer the dipped dogs to the prepared baking sheet.
  2. Whisk the egg with a splash of water and brush it over the tops of the wrapped dogs. Sprinkle with coarse salt.
  3. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until they are deeply golden brown. Let cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Serve hot with your choice of mustard, cheese sauce, or ranch. Great for parties and game days. Can be frozen for later use.
