Ingredients
  

For the Cake
  • 1 batch sturdy layer cake (vanilla, chocolate, or spice) Any flavor works well.
For the Frosting
  • 1 batch buttercream frosting Make sure it is spreadable like soft peanut butter.
  • 3-5 colors gel food coloring Different strengths for the ombre effect.
For Decoration
  • as desired sprinkles, berries Use for finishing touches.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Bake and cool your cake layers completely.
  2. Level your layers if needed for straight stacking.
Stacking and Frosting
  1. Stack the layers with filling and gently press to settle.
  2. Apply a crumb coat with a thin layer of frosting and chill for 15 to 25 minutes.
Tinting Frosting
  1. Divide the buttercream into 3 to 5 bowls and tint each with gel food coloring.
  2. Start with the lightest shade on top and the darkest on the bottom.
Frosting Application
  1. Apply horizontal bands of frosting, one color per band.
  2. Blend the bands with a bench scraper while turning the cake slowly.
  3. Chill the cake again then do a final smoothing pass for a clean finish.
Decoration
  1. Finish with simple decor such as sprinkles, swirls, or fresh berries.

Notes

Using gel coloring helps achieve bright ombre colors. If you prefer, prepare the cake a day in advance for the best texture.
