Ingredients

Bread
  • 1 large large round sesame loaf (about 8 to 10 inches wide)
Olive Salad
  • 1 to 1.5 cups olive salad (store bought or homemade)
Meats
  • 4 to 6 ounces mortadella or capicola if you love heat
  • 4 to 6 ounces salami
  • 4 to 6 ounces ham
Cheese
  • 4 to 6 ounces provolone
  • 4 to 6 ounces mozzarella (or one or the other if you prefer)
Optional Additions
  • to taste extra olive oil (if your olive salad is on the dry side)
  • to taste black pepper or oregano (if you like it extra herby)

Method

Assembly
  1. Slice the bread in half horizontally, keeping the top and bottom even.
  2. Scoop about half the olive salad onto the bottom half and spread it to the edges.
  3. Layer the meats: mortadella, salami, then ham. Fold the slices for air pockets.
  4. Add the provolone and mozzarella on top.
  5. Spread the rest of the olive salad on the inside of the top half of the bread, then close the sandwich.
  6. Wrap the whole sandwich tightly in plastic wrap or foil and place a sheet pan on top with something heavy.
  7. Let it rest for at least 30 minutes at room temperature, or 1 to 2 hours in the fridge.
  8. If chilled, let it sit 10 minutes before slicing into wedges.
  9. Serve and enjoy your Muffuletta Sandwich!

Notes

The sandwich tastes best after resting to allow the flavors to meld. It can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to 6 hours.
