Ingredients

For the Mozzarella Sticks
  • 12 pieces mozzarella string cheese sticks Can substitute with similar sized pieces of block mozzarella.
  • 1/2 cup flour For dredging.
  • 2 large eggs Beaten.
  • 1 1/2 cups Italian breadcrumbs Enhances flavor.
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder For seasoning.
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder For seasoning.
  • 1 pinch salt and pepper To taste.
  • Oil for frying vegetable or canola oil For frying.
  • 1 cup warm marinara sauce For dipping.

Method

Preparation
  1. If using string cheese, leave it as is. If using a block, cut it into sticks about the size of your finger.
  2. Set up three bowls: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with breadcrumbs mixed with seasoning.
  3. Coat the mozzarella sticks in this order: flour, egg, breadcrumbs. Repeat with egg and breadcrumbs for a double coat.
  4. Lay the coated sticks on a tray in a single layer and freeze for 1 to 2 hours.
Cooking
  1. Heat oil in a heavy pot or deep skillet over medium to medium-high heat.
  2. Fry the sticks in small batches for about 45 to 75 seconds, flipping gently, until golden brown.
  3. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate and serve immediately with warm marinara sauce.

Notes

Double breading provides a thicker shell. Ensure mozzarella sticks are fully frozen before frying to prevent leaks. They are best served immediately when crunchy on the outside and stretchy on the inside.
