Ingredients

Main ingredients
  • 4 slices bread (white, brioche, or your choice) Brioche for a richer taste, sourdough for a chewier texture.
  • 4 to 6 slices ham and/or turkey Traditional with ham, or use turkey for a lighter option.
  • 4 slices Swiss or cheddar cheese Choose your preferred melting cheese.
French toast dip
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 pinch salt Just a tiny pinch to enhance flavor.
For frying and serving
  • butter For frying the sandwiches.
  • powdered sugar Optional, for dusting before serving.
  • jam (raspberry recommended) For serving on the side.

Method

Preparation
  1. Build two sandwiches by laying down a slice of bread, adding cheese, then ham or turkey, and topping with another slice of bread.
  2. In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, and a pinch of salt.
  3. Warm a skillet over medium heat and add a small pat of butter.
Cooking
  1. Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, quickly coating both sides, and allow excess to drip off.
  2. Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook for about 3 to 4 minutes per side, adjusting the heat to ensure a golden exterior and fully melted cheese.
  3. Rest the sandwiches for a minute, then slice in half and serve with jam and a dusting of powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

If bread is very soft, let it sit for 10 minutes before starting. Avoid pressing down with a spatula to keep filling in the sandwich. Can be served savory style with mustard instead of sugar.
