Ingredients

For the cake
  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
For the butter syrup
  • 0.75 cup sugar
  • 0.33 cup unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 1-2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Method

Preparation
  1. Heat your oven to 325 degrees F. Grease your bundt pan really well.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
  3. In a larger bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar until fluffy and lighter in color.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.
  5. Add the dry ingredients and buttermilk alternately until combined. Avoid overmixing.
  6. Pour batter into the bundt pan.
Cooking
  1. Bake for about 55 to 70 minutes, checking with a toothpick for doneness.
  2. In a saucepan, heat the sugar, butter, and water for the syrup until melted and smooth.
  3. Stir in the vanilla and remove from heat.
  4. When the cake comes out, poke holes all over and spoon the warm syrup over the cake.
  5. Let the cake rest in the pan for 15 to 20 minutes before turning out onto a plate.

Notes

Make variations with lemon zest, almond extract, or a brown sugar syrup. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream if desired.
