Ingredients

For the cupcakes
  • 12 Cupcakes (vanilla or chocolate) Use homemade or boxed cupcakes.
For the frosting
  • 1 cup Unsalted butter, softened Real butter recommended for best flavor.
  • 3.5-4 cups Powdered sugar Adjust based on desired sweetness.
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract Clear vanilla extract preferred to keep frosting bright.
  • 2-4 tablespoons Milk or heavy cream To loosen the frosting as needed.
  • 1 pinch Salt To balance sweetness.
  • to taste Mini chocolate chips or black decorating gel For the ghost eyes.
  • to taste Cocoa powder or black sprinkles Optional for extra detail.

Method

Preparation
  1. Bake and cool your favorite cupcakes completely. If in a hurry, chill them in the fridge for 20 minutes.
  2. Make the white frosting by beating the softened butter until smooth and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing slowly to avoid a sugar cloud.
  3. Add vanilla, salt, and milk or cream gradually until the frosting is smooth, thick, and pipeable with peaks.
Decorating
  1. Fill a piping bag with the frosting fitted with a large round tip, or simply cut a large hole in a disposable piping bag.
  2. Pipe a tall swirl of frosting on each cupcake to create a ghost shape.
  3. Press mini chocolate chips for the eyes and mouth, or use a toothpick to dab on black gel. Do this soon after piping.
Finishing Touch
  1. Let the cupcakes sit for about 15 minutes for the frosting to firm up or chill briefly before serving.

Notes

These cupcakes are best on the day they are made, but can be stored airtight for up to a day. For a polished look, consider using fondant ghost toppers.
