Preparation
- Bake and cool your favorite cupcakes completely. If in a hurry, chill them in the fridge for 20 minutes.
- Make the white frosting by beating the softened butter until smooth and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing slowly to avoid a sugar cloud.
- Add vanilla, salt, and milk or cream gradually until the frosting is smooth, thick, and pipeable with peaks.
Decorating
- Fill a piping bag with the frosting fitted with a large round tip, or simply cut a large hole in a disposable piping bag.
- Pipe a tall swirl of frosting on each cupcake to create a ghost shape.
- Press mini chocolate chips for the eyes and mouth, or use a toothpick to dab on black gel. Do this soon after piping.
Finishing Touch
- Let the cupcakes sit for about 15 minutes for the frosting to firm up or chill briefly before serving.
Notes
These cupcakes are best on the day they are made, but can be stored airtight for up to a day. For a polished look, consider using fondant ghost toppers.
