  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20) Richer gravy
  • 1 onion, diced Adds flavor
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Enhances flavor
  • 2 tablespoons flour Used to thicken gravy
  • 2 cups beef broth Key for flavor; can substitute for chicken broth or vegetable broth
  • 1 splash Worcestershire sauce Optional for extra flavor
  • to taste salt and pepper Seasoning to taste
For the Mashed Potatoes
  • 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and chopped Real potatoes preferred
  • 2 tablespoons butter Makes potatoes creamy
  • 1 splash milk or cream Optional for creaminess
  • to taste salt Seasoning to taste

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Peel and chop the potatoes, then place them in a pot of salted water to boil.
Cooking the Beef and Gravy
  1. While the potatoes are boiling, brown the ground beef in a large skillet.
  2. Add the diced onions and minced garlic when the beef is halfway cooked, and let them sauté until fragrant.
  3. Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture and stir until well coated.
  4. Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
  5. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper, then let it simmer until the gravy thickens.
Finishing the Potatoes
  1. Once the potatoes are fork-tender, drain and mash them with butter, a splash of milk or cream, and salt.
Serving
  1. Serve the mashed potatoes topped with the ground beef gravy.

Notes

Leftovers hold up well in the fridge for 3-4 days. Keep mashed potatoes and gravy separate to prevent thickening.
