Ingredients

For the Strawberry Layer
  • 1 pint Fresh strawberries, washed and sliced
  • 1 to 3 tablespoons Sugar (to taste) Depending on the sweetness of strawberries
For the Cake Layer
  • 4 cups Shortcake or store bought pound cake, cut into cubes Angel food cake works too
For the Creamy Layer
  • 8 ounces Cream cheese, softened Beat with powdered sugar and vanilla for extra richness
  • 1/3 cup Powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1 cup Whipped topping or homemade whipped cream Can use vanilla pudding for an easier option
Optional Elements
  • Squeeze of lemon
  • Spoon of strawberry jam
  • Splash of vanilla

Method

Prepare the Strawberries
  1. Slice the fresh strawberries and toss them with 1 to 3 tablespoons of sugar depending on their sweetness. Let them sit for about 15 minutes to macerate.
Make the Creamy Layer
  1. In a bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until smooth. Fold in whipped topping until well combined.
Assemble the Trifle
  1. In a large trifle bowl or individual cups, start with a layer of cake cubes.
  2. Next, add a layer of the creamy mixture.
  3. Then add a layer of the macerated strawberries along with some of their juice.
  4. Repeat the layers until you reach the top, finishing with a layer of strawberries and whipped topping.
Chill
  1. Cover and chill the trifle for at least 2 hours, or overnight for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

Keep a few strawberries aside for garnish before serving. Chilling helps the flavors blend and the cake absorbs the strawberry juice. Best enjoyed within the first day, but can last 2-3 days if stored properly.
