  • 3-4 pounds potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet) Slice evenly for best texture.
  • 2 cups heavy cream Can substitute with half and half for a lighter option.
  • 1 cup milk Keeps the sauce pourable.
  • 2-3 cloves garlic Fresh is best; even rubbing the baking dish with a cut clove adds flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons butter For buttering the baking dish.
  • 2 cups shredded cheese Sharp cheddar plus Gruyere is recommended.
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt To taste.

  • optional thyme, paprika, or nutmeg For added flavor.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Butter a 9x13 baking dish. Optionally, rub it with a cut garlic clove.
  2. Slice 3 to 4 pounds of potatoes into even thin slices and set aside.
  3. In a saucepan, warm 2 cups heavy cream and 1 cup milk over medium low heat. Add 2 to 3 minced garlic cloves, 1.5 teaspoons salt, and black pepper. Warm until hot but not boiling.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in about 2 cups shredded cheese until smooth.
Baking
  1. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over them.
  2. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and sauce.
  3. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  4. Uncover and bake for an additional 20 to 30 minutes until the top is golden and the potatoes are tender.
  5. Let it rest for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

You can prepare the dish ahead of time and refrigerate it. For best results, allow it to warm before baking. Avoid leaving raw sliced potatoes uncovered to prevent discoloration.
