Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa, and baking powder.
- In another bowl, mix the milk, oil, and vanilla extract.
- Combine the wet and dry ingredients until just mixed.
- Pour the batter into an 8x8 inch baking dish.
Fudge Layer
- In a small bowl, mix the sugar and cocoa for the fudge sauce. Evenly sprinkle it over the batter.
- Gently pour the hot water over the top. Do not stir.
Baking
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes until the top is set.
- Let the cake rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. This cake scales beautifully; double for a 9x13 pan or halve for a small treat.
