Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour (or all-purpose flour) Oat flour can be substituted for dogs with sensitivities.
  • 1/2 cup natural peanut butter (xylitol-free) Ensure it does not contain xylitol.
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 large egg
  • as needed splash water or milk To bring the dough together.
  • optional plain yogurt For a quick dog-safe drizzle.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix peanut butter, applesauce, and the egg until it looks smooth and combined.
  3. Add the flour and stir. If the dough looks dry or crumbly, add a tiny splash of water or milk and mix again.
  4. On a lightly floured surface, pat the dough out to about 1/2 inch thick.
  5. Cut donut shapes using a donut cutter, or use two round cutters (one big circle and one smaller circle for the middle). You can also roll little ropes and connect the ends into rings.
  6. Place on a lined baking sheet.
Baking
  1. Bake for 12 to 16 minutes, depending on thickness. You want them set and lightly golden, not soft and raw in the middle.
  2. Cool completely before serving. This is important because hot treats can hurt their mouth.
  3. For slightly crunchier donuts, turn off the oven after baking and let the donuts sit inside for another 10 minutes with the door cracked.

Notes

Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days at room temperature, up to 1 week in the fridge, or freeze for 2 to 3 months. If using yogurt glaze, it’s recommended to store in the fridge.
