  • 8 cups apples, peeled or unpeeled Mix of sweet and tart apples recommended.
  • 1 cup sugar Adjust based on sweetness of apples.
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon Add more to taste at the end.
  • 1 pinch salt Enhances flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Optional, adds depth of flavor.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Prep the apples by peeling if desired, or keep the peels on if you plan to blend well.
  2. Toss the apples with sugar, cinnamon, salt, and vanilla extract.
Cooking
  1. Transfer the apple mixture to the slow cooker and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours.
  2. Uncover during the last stretch of cooking to thicken the mixture.
  3. Blend until smooth using an immersion blender or a regular blender in batches.
  4. Cook a bit longer if needed to reach desired thickness.

Notes

Best served swirled in oatmeal, spread on toast, or enjoyed on pancakes. Can also be used as a filling for sandwiches or served with cheese.
