  • 40 crackers Saltine crackers Enough to cover a standard rimmed baking sheet.
  • 1 cup Unsalted butter Use real butter, not margarine.
  • 1 cup Brown sugar Packed.
  • 2 cups Chocolate chips Semi-sweet is classic, but milk chocolate is also great.
Optional Toppings
  • to taste Chopped pecans
  • to taste Crushed peppermint
  • to taste Flaky salt
  • to taste Sprinkles
  • to taste Toasted coconut

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil, then add parchment paper on top if available. Spray lightly with nonstick spray.
  3. Lay saltines in a single layer, edge to edge. It is fine to trim a few to fit.
Cooking
  1. In a saucepan, melt butter and brown sugar together over medium heat. Bring it to a steady bubbling boil, stirring constantly for about 3 minutes.
  2. Pour the hot toffee over the crackers immediately and spread quickly with a spatula.
  3. Bake in the oven for about 5 minutes, just until bubbly all over.
  4. Remove from the oven and sprinkle chocolate chips on top. Wait about 2 to 3 minutes to let them melt, then spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee.
  5. Add optional toppings if desired, then chill until firm and break into pieces.

Notes

Keep in an airtight container. Holds well at room temperature for a few days but should be refrigerated in warmer kitchens. For variations, try adding peppermint, white chocolate swirls, or cookie crumbles.
