Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil, then add parchment paper on top if available. Spray lightly with nonstick spray.
- Lay saltines in a single layer, edge to edge. It is fine to trim a few to fit.
Cooking
- In a saucepan, melt butter and brown sugar together over medium heat. Bring it to a steady bubbling boil, stirring constantly for about 3 minutes.
- Pour the hot toffee over the crackers immediately and spread quickly with a spatula.
- Bake in the oven for about 5 minutes, just until bubbly all over.
- Remove from the oven and sprinkle chocolate chips on top. Wait about 2 to 3 minutes to let them melt, then spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee.
- Add optional toppings if desired, then chill until firm and break into pieces.
Notes
Keep in an airtight container. Holds well at room temperature for a few days but should be refrigerated in warmer kitchens. For variations, try adding peppermint, white chocolate swirls, or cookie crumbles.
