Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients
  • 40 pieces saltine crackers Enough to cover a baking sheet
  • 1 cup butter Real butter works best
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 cups chocolate chips or chopped chocolate Semi-sweet or milk chocolate preferred
Optional Toppings
  • chopped pecans For added crunch and flavor
  • crushed peppermint For a festive touch
  • sprinkles Fun for kids
  • flaky salt Optional for extra seasoning

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil and layer with parchment paper.
  2. Place saltines in a single layer, edge to edge, on the prepared baking sheet.
Making the Toffee Layer
  1. In a saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar together over medium heat, stirring gently.
  2. Once smooth, allow it to bubble for about 3 minutes until glossy.
Assembling and Baking
  1. Pour the hot toffee mixture over the saltines, spreading it quickly.
  2. Bake in the preheated oven for 5 minutes, until bubbly.
Adding Chocolate
  1. Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle chocolate chips over the top.
  2. Let them sit for 2-3 minutes before spreading into a smooth layer.
Finishing Touches
  1. While the chocolate is still soft, sprinkle your chosen toppings.
  2. Cool in the fridge for about 1 hour, or leave at room temperature until fully set.
  3. Once set, break into pieces, preferring rough shards for a homemade look.

Notes

Store in an airtight container for about a week at room temperature or longer in the fridge. Can be frozen with layers of parchment paper between pieces.
