Preparation
- Brown the butter: Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly until golden and nutty. Let cool for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Prep the pan and oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease your pan and line the bottom with parchment paper if possible.
- Mix dry ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Mixing and Baking
- Mix wet ingredients: In a larger bowl, whisk granulated sugar, brown sugar, and the cooled brown butter. Add eggs and vanilla, then whisk until glossy.
- Combine: Stir in the dry ingredients in two additions, alternating with milk or buttermilk. Stir until there are no dry flour spots.
- Add apples: Gently fold in chopped apples and pour the batter into the prepared pan.
- Bake: Bake for 35 to 45 minutes until the center springs back and a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.
Notes
Do not rush the browning of the butter for deep flavor. You can serve slices toasted the next day for a delightful treat.
