Ingredients

For the Cake
  • 1 cup Unsalted butter For browning
  • 2 cups All purpose flour
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup Brown sugar
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon Optional nutmeg can be added
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup Milk or buttermilk Either works
  • 3 cups Apples Peeled or unpeeled, cut into chunks

Method

Preparation
  1. Brown the butter: Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly until golden and nutty. Let cool for 10 to 15 minutes.
  2. Prep the pan and oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease your pan and line the bottom with parchment paper if possible.
  3. Mix dry ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Mixing and Baking
  1. Mix wet ingredients: In a larger bowl, whisk granulated sugar, brown sugar, and the cooled brown butter. Add eggs and vanilla, then whisk until glossy.
  2. Combine: Stir in the dry ingredients in two additions, alternating with milk or buttermilk. Stir until there are no dry flour spots.
  3. Add apples: Gently fold in chopped apples and pour the batter into the prepared pan.
  4. Bake: Bake for 35 to 45 minutes until the center springs back and a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.

Notes

Do not rush the browning of the butter for deep flavor. You can serve slices toasted the next day for a delightful treat.
