Ingredients

For the whipped matcha
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons Matcha powder Culinary grade works fine, smoother matcha tastes nicer.
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons Sugar Adjust to your sweetness level.
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons Hot water Use hot (not boiling) to help it dissolve.
  • 3/4 to 1 cup Cold milk Dairy or oat milk is recommended.
  • as needed none Ice cubes
  • a tiny pinch none Salt Optional.
  • a splash none Vanilla Optional.

Method

Preparation
  1. Add matcha and sugar to a small bowl, and stir them together while dry.
  2. Pour in 1 tablespoon of hot water and start whisking. Add more water little by little until you get a thick paste.
  3. Whisk until fluffy using a hand whisk, frother, or hand mixer (3-6 minutes). You want a thick, pale green foam.
Serving
  1. Fill a glass with ice and pour in cold milk, leaving space at the top.
  2. Spoon the whipped matcha on top and optionally swirl it before drinking.

Notes

If matcha clumps are present, sift it first or smash it with the sugar before adding water to avoid lumps. Sugar is necessary for stabilizing the foam.
