Ingredients

For the Custard Toast
  • 2 slices thick bread like brioche, challah, Texas toast, or thick sandwich bread Thick bread is preferred for better texture.
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons plain Greek yogurt or regular plain yogurt Use Greek yogurt for a thicker texture.
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons maple syrup, honey, or sugar Adjust sweetness to taste.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla (optional) Vanilla enhances flavor.
  • 1 pinch salt
  • Optional: lemon zest or cinnamon Customize with additional flavors.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a sheet pan with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  2. Use the back of a spoon to gently press down the center of each slice of bread, leaving a border around the edges.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg, yogurt, sweetener, vanilla, salt, and any optional spices.
  4. Spoon the custard into the wells you created in the bread, being careful not to overfill.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for about 12 to 16 minutes until the center is set and the edges are golden.
  2. Let it sit for 1 minute before adding toppings, then serve warm.

Notes

Tips for customization include using full-fat yogurt for richness or adding spices like cinnamon. Be sure to let the toast rest after baking for best results.
