  • 2-4 tablespoons water or apple cider Just enough to help steam the apples.
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon Adjust according to preference.
  • 1-3 tablespoons honey, maple syrup, or sugar Use as needed for sweetness.
  • 1-2 teaspoons lemon juice To brighten the flavor and preserve color.
  • 1 splash vanilla extract Adds aroma.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Core the apples and cut them into 1 to 1.5 inch chunks.
  2. Toss the apple chunks directly into the crockpot.
  3. Add 2 to 4 tablespoons of water or apple cider.
  4. Sprinkle in the cinnamon, and add honey or sugar if desired.
  5. Add lemon juice, vanilla, and a pinch of salt.
Cooking
  1. Cover and cook on low for 4 to 6 hours or on high for 2 to 3 hours.
  2. Stir the mixture occasionally to monitor texture.
  3. For a smooth texture, blend with an immersion blender; for chunky, mash with a potato masher.

Best if made ahead and can be stored in the fridge for up to 7 days or frozen for 2 to 3 months.
