Ingredients
  

For the Casserole
  • 4 cups Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, peeled and sliced Sliced to uniform thickness for even cooking
  • 1 cup sour cream Or cream of chicken soup for a different flavor
  • 2 cups shredded cheese Freshly shredded is best for smooth melting
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder For seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder For seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper For seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt To taste
For Topping (optional)
  • 1 cup cornflakes or breadcrumbs For a crunchy topping

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix the sliced potatoes, sour cream, half of the shredded cheese, and seasonings until well combined.
  3. Layer half of the potato mixture in a greased baking dish.
  4. Sprinkle half of the remaining cheese on top.
  5. Add the remaining potato mixture, then top with the rest of the cheese.
Baking
  1. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 40 minutes.
  2. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until the top is golden and the potatoes are tender.
  3. Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

You can prepare the casserole ahead of time and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours before baking. Add an extra 10-15 minutes to the baking time if starting from cold.
