Ingredients
  

For the Casserole
  • 1 bunch asparagus Trimmed and cut into 2-inch pieces.
  • 2 tablespoons butter For the sauce.
  • 2 tablespoons flour All-purpose flour.
  • 1 cup milk Or half and half for a richer sauce.
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese Freshly shredded for best melting.
  • 2 cloves garlic Minced.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
For the Topping
  • 1 cup buttery crackers or breadcrumbs Crushed.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add flour and whisk for 1-2 minutes to create a roux.
  3. Gradually add milk while whisking until smooth. Cook for 2-3 minutes until slightly thickened.
  4. Add in the shredded cheese, garlic, salt, and pepper. Stir until cheese is melted and sauce is creamy.
  5. In a large bowl, combine the asparagus with the cheese sauce, mixing until well coated.
Baking
  1. Transfer the mixture into a greased baking dish.
  2. Sprinkle crushed crackers or breadcrumbs on top.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.

Notes

For best results, use fresh asparagus. If using frozen, thaw and pat dry before adding to the casserole.
