Ingredients

For the pie
  • 1 pound ground beef, preferably 85 to 90 percent lean
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar, plus extra for topping
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup Bisquick baking mix
  • 2 large eggs
Seasonings and mix-ins
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon mustard (optional)
  • A pinch of garlic powder (optional)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a 9-inch pie plate.
  2. Cook the beef and onion in a skillet over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat. Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of garlic powder if you like.
  3. Spread the beef mixture evenly in the pie plate and sprinkle 3/4 cup shredded cheddar over the top.
Batter preparation
  1. In a bowl, whisk milk, Bisquick, and eggs until smooth. For classic burger flavor, whisk in ketchup and mustard.
  2. Pour this batter over the beef.
Baking
  1. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until the center is set.
  2. Sprinkle a little extra cheese on top during the last 5 minutes for a melty finish.
  3. Let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

For make-ahead, brown the beef and onion up to two days ahead. Store in the fridge and bake when ready. Leftovers keep for 3 to 4 days in the fridge and can be reheated in the oven or microwave. For gluten-free, use gluten-free Bisquick.
