  • 1 cup granulated sugar For sweetness and texture.
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Too much flour can make dough tough.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt To enhance flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract For traditional cookie flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint extract Optional for holiday flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons gel food color, red For coloring one layer.
  • 2 tablespoons gel food color, green For coloring the second layer.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Mix in the vanilla and peppermint extracts.
  3. Gradually blend in the flour and salt until just combined.
  4. Divide the dough in half and color each half with red and green gel food coloring, mixing well.
  5. Roll each colored dough into logs about 1-2 inches in diameter.
Assembly
  1. Roll the red and green doughs together to form a spiral.
  2. Wrap the log in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
Baking
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Slice the chilled dough into rounds about 1/4 inch thick and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  3. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
  4. Let cookies cool on a wire rack before storing.

Notes

Ensure the dough stays cool during the rolling process to maintain the spiral shape. Store baked cookies in an airtight container away from moisture.
